Class of 2026 Undergrad/Class of 2024 Grad: The Tours, the Auditions, the Journey

A bit more of a challenge given that IU is already your lowest cost alternative, but It is never a bad idea to ask, provided the request is honest and reasonable. My kid is much better than I am at requesting more financial assistance and it is a great skill to have (or develop) as summer festivals involve some flexible funding.
Potential justifications might include: higher cost of travel expenses to IU versus other options, recent unexpected expense (mine rather suddenly needed a new instrument) or that an increase in funding can insure that focus can stay on practice and studies without the financial stress.
Honesty is the key along with letting the school/program know how much you are honored and excited about the opportunity they are providing. Best of luck!

The application season is finally over for me! Here is my result (BM for all of them):
Boston University: accepted for composition (7,500 scholarship)
Oberlin: accepted for piano performance (25,000 scholarship) and rejected for composition at prescreen stage.
Bienen: waitlisted for piano performance (and perhaps rejected for composition)
IU Jacobs: accepted for composition with a piano concentration (25,000 scholarship)
Peabody: accepted for piano performance (into Richard Goode’s studio!) and composition (25,000 scholarship, 29,500 after appeal)
NEC rejected me from the Harvard/NEC program but somehow still has not informed me about their regular BM decision, but it doesn’t matter anymore.

I have committed to Peabody. This sub has been very helpful for me throughout my journey. Thank you all for your help!

I think you have highlighted an important aspect of the BM in VP at any university/conservatory - It is demanding. Opera rehearsals, choral rehearsals, lessons, plus classwork and three foreign languages to master well enough to sing in public. It does require a ton of passion and commitment along with hard work and talent. It is a very unusual undergrad major as weekends and evenings are usually booked with requirements, so there is very little free time. It is worth articulating for anyone seriously considering this path!

Hi, all! My S22 has officially committed to Oberlin for vocal performance. Thank you to all who contribute to these forums and conversations. He made a tough choice from some great options (including an Ivy that came in out of left field) but feels that he has found his home for the next 4 years. We are proud!

I will certainly still lurk around here and try to be helpful to future music school parents and applicants!

Congratulations🎉 What a process this is and I bet you are happy to finally know the outcome.

Congratulations to your son! Oberlin is a wonderful choice and I’m sure he will thrive there!

Congratulations!!

congratulations!!

S22 has settled on Ithaca for music ed/ performance. I was hoping for Lawrence, but in the end he wanted the bigger school and larger music and arts program. He has never stepped foot on campus and won’t until August, mainly due to dragging his feet on the process and then I fractured my leg while skiing last month and had surgery. I hope everything works out, it’s really been quite a spring for us!

Congrats on making decision! Don’t worry so much about no having been on campus. Any college can be a huge unknown, even if you have visited. My daughter went sight unseen to McGill in Montreal (non music) last Sept and loves it.

He has watched every official and unofficial video, I’ve read every review I can find, he is on the accepted students Insta page… I feel like we have a pretty good handle on what the campus looks like, the pros and cons, and the student vibe. He’s a go with the flow kinda guy, I think I’m probably way more concerned than he is. I’m glad it all worked out for your D at McGill!

My S22 just made it off the waitlist at Curtis!!! A true wrench in our plans as he was >< close to committing to Juilliard (even bought a hoodie )
He needs to schedule a lesson and visit with the professor there before making a final decision. His audition was virtual so he hasn’t seen the school yet.
