I’m a CS major taking CHE002B, MAT21C, ECS040 and one humanities class (for my GE’s). I want to drop either MAT21C or ECS040 but I can’t decide which. Any suggestions? I’m worried dropping ECS will set me back too far, and I’m worried dropping MAT21C will just push it to next quarter when I might get stuck with a worse professor which would make it even harder.

CS is only a 110 unit major. If you're a freshman, you'll have plenty of time to take MAT 21C even if you aren't able to take it next quarter. I started my CS major sophomore year, and as of right now I'm still going to graduate in four years.

My understanding is that the MAT department may choose a better professor during spring quarter because that's when the bulk of the students will be taking 21C (fall-21a,winter-21b,spring-21c). I may be mistaken, but I've taken the 16 series AND 21 series, and I found my experience much better when I took it in the "corresponding" quarter than when I took 16C during winter quarter.

Thanks, I guess I'll drop MAT 21C, then. The CS department accepts AP Calc AB/BC scores of 3 to replace MAT 21A right? (So I know I only have one for to fulfillt he 21 series CS requirement)

I'm not sure, I never took the Calculus AB/BC exam. You'll probably want to contact either the College of Letters & Sciences advising office or your CS Adviser.

Yeah, if you feel ready to get through the fundamentals of CS, I'd say power through CS 40 instead of 21C. Ken Joy is a good professor, he'll teach you the material well. He'll probably be easier than Sean Davis, but you'll have him for 60 most likely.
