Hi, I am a junior in high school and I'm planning on applying to some competitive colleges (including Ivy League colleges). I don't go to a competitive high school and very few people go on to competitive colleges. My school doesn't technically do class rank and normally we are supposed to write n/a under class rank. Does writing n/a hurt me when I know I am 1st or 2nd in my class? I may be able to convince my guidance counselor to tell me my rank. So, is it worth trying to find my rank and letting colleges know?

Thanks for responses!

I may be wrong - but unless the rank is on your official transcript it will not be considered.

^^ Oh, you’re probably right.

Then, will having a class rank as “n/a” hurt my chances?

there are lots of schools, competitve and noncompetive alike, that don’t rank. i would say that not having one neither hurts not helps your chances of admission, Just make sure that when your counselor fills out a recommendation, that she metions that you are at the top of your class and taking rigorous courses, etc. so that the college admissions people can get a relative look at where you are in your class since they wouldnt have the specific number.

I agree …

Your counselor has the ability in the guidance recommendation to write what they would like and that can be where they mention how you rank in relation to your classmates.

It’s the strength of your high school transcript (courses taken and grades) itself that carries the most weight - I don’t think you will be hurt by not having a ranking.

^Yeah if OP truly is near the top of his class, then his counselor’s rec will probably include that
