As far as I know, my school no longer ranks students (or at least doesn't let students know their rank.)
Will not having my class rank available hurt my applications? Do any colleges actually require them?
Thanks for any help!

usually when high schools (at least mine) dont rank, it means that your school is competitive and they dont want someone with a 4.0 not be in the top 10 percent of the class. For example, I have a 3.7 and am in the top 40%, but luckily my school doesnt put the rankings on the transcripts and it didnt hurt, but help me get into some schools.

So it depends on your situation. It wont hurt you if they dont do it, thats just not fair.

schools that don't rank however, also put out the top score in the class (at least my hs does). this means that they do have some kind of marker to compare you against. although they still don't know what equals top decile...but my school still calculates that information. they still output what GPA was the cutoff for the top quartile, decile, etc. up until top 2 percent, i think...

If your school does not rank, it will not hurt you. Some GC will rank confidentially if ranking is needed for admissions or scholarship consideration. Otherwise, you will be evaluated in context of your school's profile.

Id say this depends both on the school you are applying to, and the school you are applying from. If your high school has a good relationship with the college you are applying to, it will probably have no effectbut, remember, the more positive information the adcom has about you, the easier it is for them to take a chance on you. Its really common sense.

It also depends on how competitive the school your applying to is the more so, the more they count the angels on the head of your pin.

Most of the posts have tended to center on competitive/elite high schools. In my experience, it is also common for a lot of public high schools to not rank. The reason they give for this is that ranking would be based on the unweighted gpa, and they don't want to disadvantage or discourage students from taking the challenging courses. At any rate, not ranking is pretty common.

The usefulness of ranking to adcoms is that it enables them to determine what a given gpa means. Does half the school have 4.0's, or are A's hard to come by in a given school. If a school doesn't rank, adcoms will look at the high school profile that is sent along with your transcript and check the gpa distribution provided. Whether or not your school ranks won't affect your admissions chances.
