Class Schedule Help

Hello all. I need a little help in finalizing my schedule before Monday's orientation. Yes, I know it's late but I completely forgot about it until a few days ago.

Here's what it looks like so far:

Major: Biology

BIOL 1000/1101/1102 4SH
CHEM 1211/1212/1213 4SH
MATH 1251 Calculus & Diff Eq 4SH
____________ <----- NU Core or Elective

All of those courses are reqs for bio majors so I need to pick one more NU core or elective. Right now Im deciding between Intermediate Spanish, African-American Studies, Foundations of psychology, and Games and Society, which are all 4SH adding up to 16.

I feel like PSYCH would be a really cool class to take along with BIO, but I just don't want to be overwhelmed. Anyone know how much work there is? It would fulfill the Social Science NU core.

Spanish would also be a great option as I have taken it in HS, but it's not a NU core class which I would like to take.

African American Studies would also seem like a cool class to take because it's so different than my other subjects, and sounds interesting. This would fill the Social Science NU core

My last choice is Games and Society. Like, AAS, it's a nice deviation from my other rigorous Science courses. But it also seems like a joke course. It would fill the Arts/Humanitites core.

Sorry for writing for so much, just a big dilemma. Anyone have any suggestions or comments?

I’d probably take psych… it’s not very much work, and if you like it there are a few interesting psych courses (psychopharmacology, psychobiology) that you could use to fill bio electives.

There’s also no rush to fill lots of core requirements, so if you really want to take spanish, go for it.

As far as African American studies and Games & Society… save them for later, I think. As you get older you have less choices in requirements to fill, and it’s nice to be able to throw in a random elective here and there.

Are we supposed to have our class schedules made up before we get there? I thought that is one of the things we do when we get there. I am in COE and think most of my classes are set in stone anyway (according to the COE’s website) except for 1 art/humanity elective. Any suggestions on a good one, by the way?

I wouldn’t even worry because once you get there you end up doing it again anyways. They really just wanted people to have looked through it all before hand but its not a big deal at all if you literally go in empty handed.

Do you go in and meet with your advisor privately or are you just stuck in a room with 20 other people when making your schedule? Also, is there a second writing course we should take the following semester in freshman year?

Well it depends on how many people are in your major but you definitely don’t go in alone as I’m sure there’s at least one other person in your major. I only had another kid because I’m in Philosophy. Personally, I didn’t find my advisor helpful at all

You’ll probably meet with your advisor in a small group, like 3 or 4, but it might depend on your major.

You only need 1 writing course freshman year. You’ll have to take another one later on but it’s usually taken your 3rd or 4th year.

I was undeclared and in the honors program, and I met with an honors advisor one-on-one last year (maybe all undeclared students meet one-on-one?).

As an engineering student, I was in a room of like 40 kids with 2 advisors… really disappointing advising session.

Yeah looks like it definitely depends on major, since some majors (like engineering) have pre-determined schedules for the most part.

My friends who are undeclared or in GSP got a one-on-one session. I’m an econ major and it was like 10 kids with one advisor. Like what blinkangel said, some majors have pre-determined schedules and some majors have these schedules set for every semester you are at NU (like architecture and graphic design).

Last year my Comp Sci student sat down 1:1 with the asst. dean and planned the schedule. Sounds like it varies greatly by major.

For pharmacy it was maybe 30 kids or so with one advisor, and then we had a professor and two upperclass students with us as well. But that schedule’s mostly set, it was just to choose electives if you were taking AP credit.
