I have been going back and forth with myself on class scheduling. I am a sophomore currently and will be a junior next year. This year I took AP Seminar, which was paired w/ Honors Civics & Econ. I wanted to take AP Research next year due to it being paired with AP Lang, and I thought ¨Hey two AP classes in one.¨ (Since a lot of AP classes take up one whole year.) But, I am moving schools next year and the school does not have the AP Capstone Program (Seminar & Research) Should I still take AP Lang, despite it being a year long and taking away an elective? (My schools are on semester schedules)
Well, it really does not take away an elective, as it is taken in lieu of English 3, which is a requirement. But if you are a strong student, then yes, you should take it. It helps with schedule rigor. Additionally, it will help you be a better writer, which is invaluable for the following year when you are writing application essays.
My only concern is that AP Lang is a year long, and English III would only be a semester, so it would take away an elective from my schedule.
Unless there is an elective that your really want to take that you cannot fit in, my advice remains the same.
As a senior in high school, I strongly recommend taking AP Lang, even if it takes up an elective spot. In my opinion, it is the most useful class you can take in high school, regardless of your college/career plan. Good writing is an important skill for everyone.
Take AP Lang.
Is your new school on Block Scheduling (or are all classes year-long)?
What else would you be taking?
My new school is also block scheduled, semester long classes (except for stuff like AP Lang)
I am already signed up for:
Pre-Calculus Honors
Biology Honors
AP US History (year long)
Health Science 2
Spanish 1
Yes from me too on taking AP Language and Comp. My daughter also thought it was one of the most useful classes she took in high school. Super helpful to take with APUSH too where there is a lot of writing. She said it helped tremendously for the AP exam in history, and also for the ACT. She is a STEM focused kid and ended up with great sub scores in English and reading which she fully credits to AP Language.
