What is the average class size at NYU? How much attention do you get from your professors? I applied to a few liberal arts colleges, but I was rejected by them. I feel very iffy about going to NYU because for the reason that of class size and access to professors. I’m planning on going to law school in the future, and that would really mean establishing good relationships with professors so I could get good letters of recommendations. And I’m also a bit reserved, so I would hate if it is hard to get their attention or to reach out to them. Can anyone please give me some insight? Thanks.
Average class size really depends on the school you’re in and the subject of the classes.
For example, I’m in CAS studying Econ and I’ve had Econ classes that were like 200 (intro classes which were required by everyone for an Econ major) to about 75 (200 level classes which are like 200 level electives that you can choose) and to about 30 (300 level electives). You can definitely participate in the 200 level classes (the ones that I’ve been in) by sitting in the front and answering and asking intellectual questions. I’ve also taken language classes and it’s been about 15 a class.
I’ve taken 4 classes through Stern and those classes have been more consistent at around 60 per class (and those classes were the Stern “core classes”)
Professors also have office hours once a week for about 2-3 hours so you can definitely go to those and speak to them more about their research, your interests, etc. to establish a good relationship if you don’t want to speak up during class. Overall it really depends how active you are and how much of an effort you put in to get to know your professors (and partly how personable your professors are at wanting to speak to you and get to know your name/face)
But overall all the professors I’ve had were very open to hearing your thoughts and showed interest in discussing ideas, helping you learn, and offering advice.
