So I attended the online chat Brandeis held for newly admitted students, and I realized A LOT of students were asking about the pre-med track/program they offer in Brandeis, I know it has a really good reputation, but then, is there A LOT of students who do pre-med at Brandeis? With so many students, can we get the attention we need?

Also, what is the average class size in Brandeis, even though it’s an unviersity, it’s relatively a smaller one, isn’t it?

"a really good reputation." Yes and no. Yes, in the sense that it will prepare you for the difficulty and intensity of medical school. No, in the sense that very few people get into the elite schools, mostly people go to the lower-tier med schools or don't get in anywhere. Also, in all my interactions with real M.D.'s never once did any of them mention Brandeis specifically as a great school.

If you're a real bloodhound you can track down people here and get the personal attention you want/need. However, in terms of academic and emotional support of being a pre-med you're going to get very little of it. Some science professors I found to be very nasty and resentful of us (pre-meds), because they felt we were only taking their classes because they were required for medical school and preferred students who wanted to be Ph.D. lab junkies like them. Orgo is the best example of this. (Orgo is actually mostly useless in actual medicine--confirmed by my own primary care doctor.) But anyway...

Average class size is a stupid statistic because class sizes vary so much. There are some classes with 5 students and others with 200-300. They'll commonly tell you "17" although in four years I've had only one 17-student class, a few of 20-30 and mostly 40-50 and above. General sciences are enormous, and even the popular upper-level sciences can be 75-100 occasionally. Only a few science professors I ever bothered to learn our names, even in classes with maybe only 40 students.

I was fortunate enough to get into medical school. However, my honest opinion is that Brandeis didn't get me in; I got myself in. Independence is the name of the game here. Believe it or not you'll probably get 100 times more personal attention in medical school itself than you will at Brandeis!

wow, from several other posts and this one, it seems like you really really hated Brandeis... well, thx for the reply, it is quite useful. maybe i will just choose McGill instead...
