Class size

On average how big are introductory classes at MU? In the Business school? What are the methods of evaluation in these classes? How are exams weighted (e.g. 50% midterm, 50% final)?

I do not know about Business, but Honors classes are much smaller than regular and for that reason are easier because prof. is more accessible. Exams are weighted differently from class to class, depending on how many exams, other projects, other tests, prof’s mood and attitude…other factors. For example, if class as a whole is not doing that well, prof might throw in home take exams to give people more chances, but again I am talking about nice prof with positive attitude. There is no general rule. However, as a general rule Miami profs are very dedicated to UG teaching and passionate about their subjects and teaching them. At some other top colleges, profs are there primarily for thier research and teaching is secondary for them. It is great that ss a general rule it is NOT the case at Miami.

My DS is a freshman, but not in the business school. Since he is undecided, he is concentrating on various Miami Plan requirements. NONE of his classes have been anywhere close to 50% midterm 50% final. His math, chemistry and 200 series Spanish classes included 4 to 6 tests and several quizzes. All classes had homework. I believe he said some teachers take attendance into account - several of the classes used “clickers” so there is a documented record of your attendance and participation. The freshman English classes, that everyone must take, consist of 4 or 5 papers due throughout the semester.

As you proceed into more advanced classes things may change - he will find out sooner rather than later.

“The freshman English classes, that everyone must take,”
-They can use AP credit. D. had to take one Honors English because she had “4”, not “5” on her AP exam. If she had “5”, she would have been done with English requirement without taking English in college. This one was very small and easy class. While English was waste of time besides being required, she commented that her Spanish class was very good and she felt that she had improved a lot. I do not know details about number of tests/quizzes, but I believe that each prof is different. I also believe that some profs take attendance while others do not, but D. always talked/emailed if she could not go to class for some reason. D. is graduating in May and is having easy last semester.
