Just heard that the number of admitted students for 2011 is ~ 525. Carleton usually tries for 500 or so. Class of 2010 was ~ 505, class of 2009 was ~ 550.

Are "admitted" students those who were accepted or those who were accepted and actually decided to attend Carleton? Also, do you know what the acceptance rate was for the class of 2011? I believe it was 29% for 2010.

Off the top of my head, the class of 2010 had a 32% admit rate. After years of increasing numbers of applicants, for 2010 Carleton received a couple of hundred less applications than for the class of 2009 when they hit a record of over 5000. Thus, the admit rate rose last year. For class of 2009, I believe the admit rate was the lowest yet ~ 28%. For class of 2008, the admit rate was 29%. These rates were overall - Carleton's ED has been over 40%.

Thanks, Maize&Blue.

It's interesting that they seem to have permanently increased the class size. When the class of '05 was in the mid-500s, everyone talked about how overwhelmingly large it was. Also, I'm guessing that if the number they have right now is 525, at least a handful of them will ultimately not enroll.

I can say that I am shocked by how small most of my daughter's classes at Carleton are. At several universities where I am a professor, we would cancel most classes for lack of interest when they got below a certain number (about 5-7 students), but about half of my daughter's classes at Carleton seem to have about 5-12 students.
