Hey guys,
I am trying to decide on my college, and one big deciding factor is class size. My question for you guys is: What are the average introductory class sizes at Carleton?
Ds just happens to be here so I asked him this question. He said his largest class was Intro to Bio, which had 50 kids. But that was, he heard, particularly large for that class.
Most of my D’s freshman classes have been 16 students. Maybe one class was in the 20’s.
For some of the sciences (e.g. Intro Bio or Intro Psych), class sizes can go pretty high up there but even in those classes, the labs will be capped at 20 people each. There’ll be plenty of professors and prefects in each class to make sure each student gets the help they need. Otherwise, class sizes will probably be 15-20ish and will usually be smaller as a student moves up into their major.
Please remember that at most colleges 'a large class '=100+ students and 'a small class’s has 25or fewer.
That at Carleton 'largest imaginable ’ would be 50 and ‘normal’ would be 16-20 tells you a lot about class size, in that, the norm is ‘small jy any standard’, which would imply interactive and not all lecture-based.
