I’m a rising junior and I’m really conflicted about what classes to take at my school this year. I’m looking to apply to schools like duke/jhu and I’ll be applying to the university in my state as well, but mainly for duke and jhu would a language class be very important? I’m fluent in chinese (5 on AP test, spoke since a child), but I didn’t take the class at school, so no credits.
I took a year of french in highschool, but I didn’t continue, and this year (junior) I plan on taking Latin 1 and next year (senior) I plan on taking Latin 2. First of all, I’m not sure how important 2 years of language will be, since I’m starting so late and will only have 2 language credits, and since I’ll be applying to schools summer of senior year/start of, I won’t have a full Latin 2 credit so will it make a difference in my college applications anyways? Again, I am fluent in chinese so I guess I could put that somewhere in my application, but it worries me to not have a language.
One more question, would colleges rather see that I take APUSH or have two years of language (latin)? As of now, I can’t take APUSH because my schedule will not allow it with latin, so I’m taking regular USH, but would it be more advantageous (esp. at schools like jhu or duke) to have taken APUSH rather than Latin?
For college apps, if I don’t take Latin, I can put down at least 1 credit of french, but if I take latin 1 and 2, I can ovbiously put down 2 credits of latin in addition to 1 credit of french, but the important part is that colleges usually require 2 years. But for duke/jhu would it matter if I had 2 yrs of language even, because I think they like to see 4 years (I didn’t check but I think that’s the req? maybe)
Some other factors I have to weigh in here are that a) I do enjoy US history but b) the APUSH class at my school is extremely hard (but I guess that’ll be good prep. for the AP test) and c) I will and have taken all AP/honors except for APUSH as of now and 9th grade civics, and I got all A’s with a few A-'s, so I’m not sure if not taking APUSH will be such a big deal in college applications. But again, I’m going in circles, but I do want to take APUSH because I enjoy the subject so it’s not only for college applications, but if none of this had any say in college apps, I would choose APUSH over latin
Thank you!! and sorry for all of the questions I’m just really confused haha
I’d think it’d be better if you took the two Latin classes then take APUSH since most colleges require AT LEAST 2 years of foreign language.
Would you mind if I asked what your intended major is?
Without this knowledge, I would say take a foreign language. My high school only requires 0.5 credits in a language, which is a half year into to a language. Most colleges or universities require at a minimum two credits, but look for more, I’m planning on taking Spanish V senior year.
Would you be able to take French junior and senior year, that way you’d have 3 credits of the same language?
