How important are foreign language classes?

I’m taking German 1 online this summer and German 2 online next spring but I’m not sure about whether or not to take German 3. Duke recommends that people take 3 but is it really that important if I’m planning on engineering? I’m currently top of my class (took lots of AP classes successfully), with my extracurricular activities in order (job, volunteering, trying to start a programming club, already in a lot of other clubs, swim team, etc.) and I’m taking the ACT this summer (did pretty bad on the SAT, didn’t study for it) and I’m going to keep taking it until I get 33/34. I am still a Sophomore so it’s not like I don’t have time to take German 3, it’s just that if I don’t take German 3 then I would have a total of 4 classes Senior year instead of 8 which is really my end game considering how hard I’ve worked. If Duke would consider not taking German 3 an application breaker I suppose I can take it summer before senior year, but I just would like to know what you guys would do in my shoes (speaking of which I haven’t bought new shoes in like a year I need to stop wasting paychecks on overpriced Ice cream)?

At highly selective schools like Duke, recommended should be seen necessary to be a competitive candidate.

Exactly…at top colleges your competitors are taking that 3rd and 4th year of language.
