Classes next year

Hi, I am a junior at a public school in SoCal and i had some questions about my schedule for next year. I am very unsure as to my major; dentistry, biomed, and business are all on the table. So far I have taken pretty rigorous courses, with AP Euro, AP Bio, precalc honors, sophomore year. This year I am taking AP lang, AP spanish 4, AP calc ab, AP physics B, and AP US history.

I am looking at top schools including UCLA and Berkeley as well as UChicago, Northwestern, NYU, Columbia, UPenn, Duke, John Hopkins (probably not because only medical and I would get screwed if i changed my mind) and Rutgers.

My proposed schedule right now is AP Govt, AP Lit, AP Physics C, AP Chem, AP Stats, and AP Psych.

My questions revolve around math and spanish. I want to be done with Spanish because I'm not too crazy about the subject, although I heard that it's moving to a curriculum more focused on culture and history. I am good at that type of thing, so I could potentially do well in the class. As I have stated, I really do not want to take it so I can focus more on other subjects. However, I have heard that many schools (especially UChicago) like students with advanced knowledge in many fields so I'm not sure if it would hurt me. As far as math, I understand it well and got a 780 math on the SAT 1, but I have gotten Bs in some classes (only Bs 10-12). Should I basically make a statement that I am not weak in math by taking Calc BC? or should i stick with stats because doing so would be redundant?

To sum it up, what is more valuable for the schools I am applying to: all the core sciences with AP bio, physics B and C, and chem plus psych, continuing spanish, or improving my math record?

I know this is a long post but I would really appreciate any help, our counselors are completely overloaded at this time.

OK, does your school have AP Spanish? Why do you want to take AP Psych or Stats? In my opinion, I think colleges do want to see that you’ve continued your language. It works the same for math. If you had Calc AB you can manage BC and it’d be great on your transcript. If you did Physics B you can do Physics C. My counselor would say the “depth” of having those classes for two years looks really good. I’d say keep Spanish but give up Stats & Psych.

Ya, we have AP Spanish 5. I wanted to take psych because I hear it’s not that bad and it seems interesting. I also heard that colleges like to see that statistics has been taken. I guess if the added depth of BC and spanish 5 might be worth it though. Thanks for your opinion.

Any other suggestions?

I hope some others will answer you. I’d just say AP Stats & Psych are “lighter” APs in general. It all depends on your school and teachers of course, but Calc BC and Spanish 5 would seem to count for more.

Ya I’ve heard pretty much the same. The calculus BC teacher says it’s redundant and unwise to take BC after AB. I will consider spanish 5 though, I guess I’ll work my butt off for one semester then neglect it second semester.

Calc BC might be a good self-study for you. Then you could take Stats, which shouldn’t be too bad. If you are truly interested in Psych, take it or self-study.

Ya I talked to my counselor today (finally a small line after school) and she recommended that I stick with stats but take Spanish instead of psych. I’ll just take psych at a community college. The BC self-study sounds appealing although I might be burnt out with 6 APs as it is. Thank you for your advice :)
