Classes senior year

I have a bit of a academic tangle here, should i take AP chem or AP physics my senior year? I only have room for one and I don't know which one would be better for the academy. Also, I've had a chem class before but I've never had a physics class

Physics, in light of your void there. You'll be required to take both @ USNA and absence of a physics course could be a real flag, even with an AP chem course on the books. This is a no brainer.

AP Chem might serve you better if you gain an appointment at USNA as it generally presents some difficulty- physics is usually not taken until 3C year at the academy. So if there was room for only one, chem might be the better choice.

question is, what chem have you had already?

Your original Chem class. When was it? Regular or honors? What was your grade? I assume you have not had any Physics.

Great question though. I would call the Academy and ask your Regional Director (and let us know what he says). AP Chem would probably serve you better once you get there but not sure which one would help you better in the admissions process. Then, if you were a strong candidate, it would probably really not matter. However, as a stand alone, great question, ask admissions.

can you double up on science? take both chem and phys? i know it's a tough load, but if you can take them and do well, admissions should be impressed!

If you are thinking of taking AP physics, what is your current level of mathmematical training? My daughter took AP physics at the same time as calculus I in HS. She did well in it, but it was a very difficult struggle, because a lot of physics is calculus-based. Unless you have already taken calculus, or you will at least be taking it at the same time, I would not recommend taking AP Physics. You should be able to talk to the physics teacher to verify how much knowledge of calculus will be required.

Have to go with AP Chem. My Mid did the AP Physics and wished he had done AP Chem. He did have a honors conceptual Physics class his freshman year of HS and Honors Chem soph year. (AP Bio Jr year) He thought that AP Chem would have served him better at the Academy. By 3/C year he could see how weak the AP Physics course really was even though he got a 5 on the AP Test he did not think that it helped all that much, especially second semester with Electricity and Magnetism. My son had the same problem as AP Chem and AP Physics were taught in the same period so he too had to choose.

USNA69 is correct ask the regional director. They can be a great resource.

Which one do you want to take? Which speaks to your academic curiosity? Go with your gut on this rather what will "get you in" Don't think either choice is bad nor would either be a deal breaker.

I would take physics since you have already taken chem. I never took any AP classes except history and did fine at the academy.

Once you've determined the correct course, do let us know your course of action. ;)

Actually, I think I'm taking Physics! And the chem class I had was honors 10th grade year and I breezed through it so I'm going to take the Physics.I'm in Pre Calc math right now as well. My original plan was to take both but I needed some classes that were messed up due to my transfer 10th grade year (I needed swimming and typing), but i decided against it because I play sports after school so I need a lunch. But thank you guys for the help!

Yours would seem to be the wise, optimal choice. Good decision, good luck! Keep us posted!
