Classics Major at Northwestern

Dear all,

My daughter is considering applying to Northwestern U next year as a Classics major. Does anyone know how strong the program is, how many students in a given year are Classics majors (either on its own or as part of a double major with something else and are there any rockstar Classics professor who could provide research opportunities?
Thanks

I just noticed a typo and it is too late to edit. I meant “are there many rockstar Classics professors who could provide research opportunities?”

Thanks!

londondad - I would love to help you out - but both my NU kids attended McCormick - the engineering school. I have provided a link - to the main Classics page http://www.classics.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/major-requirements.html .

And here is a link to Research Opportunities: http://www.classics.northwestern.edu/undergraduate/research-opportunities.html

Good Luck!

Thank you!

Daughter is a sophomore Classics major at Northwestern. She turned down a couple of major universities with (perhaps) stronger Classics programs, mostly because she just felt the fit at NU was best for her. She is tremendously happy with her choice - she is doing extremely well at NU, which I suppose contributes to her feelings about the school. Would she have been just as happy at one of the other schools? Probably. Would she have had a qualitatively different experience at one of the other schools? Who knows?

I will say this - she has seen one tangible benefit of a smaller Classics program, and that is this - she has absolutely been noticed by the professors within the department. They have already been offering advice - about graduate programs, summer jobs, telling her to submit papers for awards, etc. This has been a happy surprise, something I don’t think she could have reasonably anticipated.

Hope this helps.

@KMDad1! Thank you for a very helpful post. This is exactly the sort of information I was looking for. My DD is pretty extroverted and tends to get noticed by her teachers as a result, so NU may be a great fit for her in that regard. Thanks again.
