My S will likely go to either Rutgers of WM to study Classics. I’d like to know which program is stronger. Since I know warblersrule is very knowledgeable about Classics programs, I invite him/her to chime in with an opinion. Thanks.
@warblersrule tagging you per the above post.
I can’t speak to the programs, but I"m a huge W&M fan. Small school feel, beautiful feel, engaged faculty.
Glancing over the websites of both schools, Rutgers and W&M seem to be two solid choices for classics. Greek and Latin are offered at all levels in the fall at both, and there’s a decent spread of civilization courses as well. Rutgers is also well-known for its extremely strong philosophy program, if ancient philosophy is of interest.
Personally, I side with @VAMom23 in recommending William & Mary if it’s affordable. Classics (and other humanities) courses will be very small at both universities, but in general it’s much easier to find small classes and student-faculty interaction at a smaller school like W&M. The students at W&M are also more uniformly excellent than at Rutgers, where you have a very wide spread of students.
Thanks so much for your feedback!
