DD’18 has just returned from a college visit to Clemson and has decided that she is VERY interested in Clemson. She is OOS (TX), currently has a 27 ACT (will take again in Sept, but I don’t see it getting higher), GPA is 3.5uw/4.2w on a 4.0 scale. And five AP scored four (4) and one (3) So she is just within the 25% - 75% range, but obviously not within a true comfort zone. So she is looking for a way to put her best foot forward.
This year Clemson is accepting their online app (which I hear is sans essay) and the Coalition app. Clemson says they do not favor either app. She had already ready written a decent essay in response to a Coalition app prompt. Coalition app allows her to self report her AP scores which are four (4) and one (3).
Which app would you suggest she submit? Would you think the Coalition app might shine a bit more light on her and round out her profile so it is not entirely stat driven, or do you think Clemson is likely to skim over the essay and just look at the stats?
Also should she submit now when the app opens (apparently housing is tied to when app is submitted) and update with ACT scores if they improve or just wait until the new score is available? (Previous ACT score and transcripts have already been sent)
Hello @labegg. My son just applied to Clemson. I have spoken with Admissions (and went to their Spring Blitz week for prospective students) and have been informed acceptance is strictly based on GPA, rigor of HS classes, and SAT/ACT scores. We have submitted all info and have been informed we can always send his Oct. SAT results after and they will just update his record. Essays and EC are only looked at if they are applying for the Honors program. On the on-line application it is asked if AP classes have been taken and to list them. They will no the scores once the college board sends them if they are accepted. What major does your daughter want to go for? We are from NJ and my son would like to go into their business/economics program.
She is looking at psychology. She ended up submitting the Coalition app. She followed up today to ensure that everything was on track. It was a good thing she did because they had not matched up her transcript to her application! Did you son receive a portal,/application number or something to check the status? They also said to make sure her GC filled out a school report.
@mweb136 does clemson require their applicants to send all AP test scores? Cause I did really bad on 1of my AP tests and don’t want it to hurt me when applying
@carolinamom2boys DD did not receive notification that her app was received back w h en she submitted it on Aug 1. We were a bit panicky because we had not gotten anything and they said we should get confirmation and as you know housing is tied to the application date! An email finally came today indicating they had received the app, giving her an application # and notifying her that they had all of the supporting documents in hand and to expect a decision Feb 15. It was good thing we called!
That’s great news @labegg . I mainly posted so others would know that there is no portal to check status , so it’s important to contact the school of they don’t hear anything .
@carolinamom2boys I’m out of state and my school doesn’t do class rank nor weight gpa, so will Clemson more likely place alot of emphasis on my course rigor and/or will they weight my gpa on their own?
@Trackrunner445 no, you do not need to report the AP results upon application. What major were you applying for? My son chose Business as first and Economics as second.
