One thing about UGA business which I agree is strong especially if you want to stay in the South (might not be as well known in NYC area)…you have to apply to Terry after you matriculate. I don’t think there is a direct admit option (Wake is the same way, you have to wait to apply).
I think Clemson has direct admit but not sure…or at least it isn’t as hard to get in later?
So my question is how does the academic rigor compare at the two schools? I want my son to get a good education, but I don’t want him stressed out all of the time and I want him to enjoy his college experience.
Any feedback on the rigor of the two schools?
One reason Wake is NOT on our list is the fact that it is known for being quite rigorous (we have been there twice with his sisters). Great school but not for my son (but as of now he has the grades for Wake). He needs a balance of good academics that lead to career options and an inclusive social scene where he can make great friends and experience great school spirit.
Seems to me from reading your preference is Clemson. I’m not clear why you aren’t allowed to apply to College of Charleston or Indiana. Those don’t seem radical choices to me.
@collegemomjam I can’t comment on the academics at Clemson, but my D is a freshman at UGA. I think UGA is exactly what you’re looking for. My D took 19 credits last semester. She enjoyed her classes and learned a lot, but didn’t have to kill herself studying to do well. She was very involved on campus (multiple clubs, volunteering, attending lectures, intramurals, etc.) as well and still had plenty of time to attend football, basketball, and volleyball games, work out, socialize, and just relax. She’s pre-Terry. Feel free to ask if you have more specific questions.
@itsgettingreal17 thanks so much! I may private message you! My husband’s business partner toured UGA with his daughter recently and he absolutely loved it, and he is also from NJ, as is he daughter. I think she was admitted and will probably be attending. I’m really very interested in this school for my son and will hopefully get him down there this summer. Thanks again.
@Booajo It’s nothing against CofC or IU, it’s just the whole, “i’m not about to pay X amount of dollars for that school”. My dad wants me to go to a school he would be proud to tell his friends that his son goes there. No complaining here as I am very fortunate to be able to afford most out of state costs.
@itsgettingreal17 very interesting to see just how rigorous your D feels about the school work. I know when I tell my mom that I had 3 hours of homework I had about an hour or so, but if I really have a lot of work I will make a point and usually freak out. So, if your D feels that there is a healthy balance that is very encouraging.
@itsgettingreal17 agreed with Wake. When I visited they made a point of explaining why it is called “Work Forest”. Doesn’t really feel very appealing to a perspective student.
@RightyRiper Easy killer!!! You might get a lot heat here… Both C. of Charleston and IU are fine schools and they are very popular with a long list of proud fans…
@RightyRiper so are you saying it is more or less rigorous than @itsgettingreal17 daughter is feeling it is? I can’t tell exactly what you mean.
Also, Kelley at Indiana is always ranked very high…top 10 usually for undergrad business schools in some of the more widely used rankings (if you can really use them). I think UGA might have stronger academics in some other areas, but as far as business is concerned, Kelley has a strong reputation.
@collegeisago Well said. My son turned down Clemson Calhoun Honors to attend the Honors College at CofC , and I couldn’t be prouder. @RightyRiper might want to do a little research on the number of Goldwater and Rhodes Scholars that have come out of the school before he insults it. Frankly, I couldn’t be happier it’s not on his list.
Hey, It is not me who is insulting them. All the schools i’ve talked about are incredible and be extremely happy to attend any. Like I said I would LOVE to go to CofC. I’ve already talked with the parents about where they would be willing to pay out of state money and they told me where and that was that. Perhaps I could do a little more research and try and persuade my parents to look closer into these other schools, but I have already tried.
Thanks to y’all’s advice Im going to do my best to at least try and persuade my parents just to let me apply. Then maybe the final cost will change. We will see!!!
Ultimately, my parents judge the school based off of how high it is on the US News top 100. And if you say that isn’t how you should judge a school, you are preaching to the choir, but if the school isn’t in the top 100 my parents won’t pay for it.
^^^^That is so wrong in so many ways. Please remind your folks that USNWR is in the business to sell rankings. That’s pretty much all they do anymore. With that in mind, they cater their college ratings to appeal more to those parents/students who will PAY for their website/books. Typically those are people who are more into private universities than public ones and the ratings reflect that.
CofC is a regional university and not ranked with public universities . USNWR has several different categories that they rank. I’m just saying that @RightyRiper you’ve made several disparaging remarks regarding Clemson and CofC on this thread including saying that Clemson seems like it had a lot of inbreds. You may want to rethink attending any schools in a state that you have such a low opinion of.
YES watched the whole game! One of the greatest football games i’ve ever watched. Disappointed with Clemson’s performance though .
@carolinamom2boys alright… I’ve already said it multiple times, the MAIN REASON I am interested in these schools is because of the people there. Not sure if you are confusing my opinion with that of my parents, but I am not sure where you are getting this “low opinion” of mine. Both of my parents parents are from the D.C. area and my parents as well as a majority of people in the Washington simply do not regard CofC as a good school. They will give you no reason to back up their opinion. Same thing goes for both Alabama, Auburn and UofSC and the rest of the schools like that in the south. On the other hand, my family and I like the idea of these schools, but at the same time want to go to a school that is viewed as “difficult” to get in. From my highschool, no one with a GPA greater than 3.0 has ever been denied from any of those schools, so they aren’t “good enough” for my parents. Again, if it were 100% my decision it would be different, but I am not the one writing the check.
That’s fine @RightyRiper . I guess my opinion came from your “inbred” statement regarding students at Clemson. That was your statement , wasn’t it? Since you just dismissed most of the schools in the South , you may really want to reconsider a southern school.
This may not be the case for Clemson or Georgia, but coming from New Jersey and having a background in admissions, I have noticed that some regional schools, especially the private ones, will sometimes admit students from different parts of the country using slightly lower standards in order to diversify the geographical distribution of their student bodies (which can be a good thing). So its possible that, for example, the College of Charleston may admit some students that are not from the South with slightly lower stats than some students from the South in an attempt to diversify the campus a little more. I don’t have specifics for C of C, but I do remember last year our NJ high school did phenomenally well with the University of Miami and from what we could make of it from the stats posted by the accepted students from up here vs. the students from Florida, it seemed significantly harder for the locals to get in. The Florida applicants seemed frustrated by this. And we had some kids that got in from here that frankly shocked me (and Miami does have its fair share of Northeasterners already).
My point is that perhaps @RightyRiper you and/or your parents have a false sense of some of the southern schools’ academic quality because they might be a bit more lenient in accepting students from your high school because they have so many more applicants from the south and they are trying to diversify.
Just a thought.
For what it is worth, as an admissions counselor I do think many Southern schools are becoming more and more popular…not just the SEC and ACC football schools, but many others too. I think climate is a big factor as well as social media and the southern traditions and more laid back lifestyle are becoming quite appealing to students from other parts of the country. That’s a good thing!! I know we would like to tour some Southern schools this summer with my son.
I would end the debate by choosing UGA since that was your initial question… Great Academics. Great College Town. and as stated before an excellent football which is the only one of the two heading to the finals… All of this should keep you happy for years to come
