Excellent suggestion @collegeisago .
Thank you all for your input! I definitely agree @collegemomjam that my parents and maybe myself underestimate the caliber of many of these southern schools. Really 100% agree with everything you said. It is too bad that schools such as CofC don’t get the recognition that many of these small liberal arts schools in the north east do. Sadly, when I tell my classmates that I was blown away by a school like CofC they look at me like i’m an idiot. One response that offended me was, “why would you waste your education on Charleston?”. Even for Clemson, a school that is not easy to get into the first response from a few of my good friends was, “isn’t that a bad school?”. These people obviously are not educated on these schools, they are basing it simply on the stereotype they have for the school. It honestly made me really frustrated that there isn’t more respect, but that in a nutshell is the dilemma.
Better we end the debate here, thank you for y’all’s input! UGA definitely got a leg up with some good points.
-Thank you
@RightyRiper seems like this thread was helpful to you (I know it was for me) and hopefully helped in promoting some of the Southern schools that we are talking about because as you said they deserve the good recognition. When people read threads like this hopefully it will create that awareness. I know I am really excited to see some of these schools myself this summer. We were already very impressed with Wake (but too rigorous for my son) and of course UNC, but can’t wait to see some of these others, especially Georgia and Clemson which is how I found this thread to begin with.
I know what you mean about people up here having the wrong opinion of schools that maybe aren’t as well known in the northeast…but I’m seeing a shift at least with my clients. I’m sure students like you will spread the good word if you end up at one of these fine institutions.
Good luck to you!!!
Hopefully! I would love to do my best to advocate for these schools because everything about them are promising. Thank you, and good luck to you and your son as well! Hopefully one day I’ll be his classmate.
I should add that a lot of these kids do not anything about anything Comments such as this
“why would you waste your education on Charleston?”. Even for Clemson, a school that is not easy to get into the first response from a few of my good friends was, “isn’t that a bad school?”.
is a reflection of that. I get the fact that Harvard is Harvard, but in all honesty so what. I like to think that I am pretty well rounded, but for sure not a place for me. I also get the fact that perhaps some schools might be known to be better than others and I myself have looked for some opinions in this valuable community, but by the end of the day, all that we are left with is with an opinion. It is best to visit not once but a few times if that helps to see if it is a good fit… Even then, how do we know for sure? What is the place is amazing, but we just can’t stand our roommates? I do not know if we will ever be sure.
I had wanted to know about Miami U vs Ohio State. This is was a great place to ask especially after visiting both schools. Many here posted their opinion and it was truly helpful to the point that it reinforced some of the same pros and cons I have about the two schools. As it is, Miami is probably out (a very fine University). So here I am coming down the what is probably The Ohio State U and UGA. Yes the same UGA that I am recommending to you, but in my case OSU might be the better fit for me. You are basically comparing two similar settings, but once you get beyond that, UGA is by far the better Business school. In my case, they are both similar schools as well, but when you start thinking more about Urban vs College Town, then you start to see the differences. Just have to keep on digging.
I actually visited Co of Charleston and I absolutely loved it… Actually I think it is probably close to the perfect setting. Great city. Great Weather. Great Beaches. and yes great academics especially the honors college. But I wanted the rah rah rah school and with that, Co of Charsleton would not work… But nobody here thinks that that is bad school. You should see how many kids from the area go there. By the way lots of kids from the NE. Perhaps maybe more than UGA or Clemson…
@collegeisago I think College of Charleston is becoming quite popular up here in NJ…even if kids don’t end up there, a lot of them are touring it and liking it…but as you said it doesn’t have the rah-rah so if that is a priority, it might not work.
As for Ohio State, I am also quite interested in the Big 10 schools for my son as well…only drawback is the weather, but they are certainly appealing also for a lot of the same reasons the Southern schools are…I would love to take him to see Ohio State and Wisconsin, maybe Indiana. We have already seen Michigan…great place but a bit more rigorous. They all have GREAT business schools and TONS of rah-rah.
For me I am looking for a school with strong yet manageable academics, school spirit, and also a bit more of a NON north-eastern stress factor, if that makes any sense. I have two daughters each in rigorous north-eastern business schools (Boston College and Georgetown) and they are in the perfect schools for them and I am very happy with these schools for them. But my son wants and needs a less intense environment that will still lead him to wonderful career opportunities…and maybe exposure to a more relaxed place to live after college, like Atlanta or Charlotte. That’s what is pointing us to the South. Like I said, we can’t wait to check it out.
This thread has been very helpful.
@collegemomjam you should look into some of the Big 10 schools as well… Living in Atlanta all these years, the appeal of going out of state is far greater than staying home. However, UGA has become much more difficult to get into. The same case for OHIO State…They are ranked the same and offer similar things. If your son is looking at some of the Southern schools and based on some of the information you have provided, maybe he might want to look at USC and FSU Maybe even more so than Clemson. I applied to FSU and I am waiting to hear. However, I was able to secured a very nice scholarship at OSU and it seems more and more likely where I end up. With a UGA a close second…
I visited Indiana and Wisconsin . Loved Wisconsin… but no money so I did not apply. The weather? Well I think the weather is ticking off a lot of people these days. It was actually 16 degrees in Atlanta today with a high of 32. Yes, that is cold and it will continue to stay cold all week. But I think that is unusual which I guess its the same for everyone.
Also coming from the north, the weather isn’t so much how cold it is (the HIGH in columbus on Friday is 9), but more so the short depressing days along with continuous illnesses. Then take that short depressing cold and make it last nearly the entire time that you are physically at the university and I’m sure it can be hard.
As a current Georgian and former northerner who came from the NE to attend UF for grad school, I think your parents and your friends are misguided. Going to college isn’t about the bragging rights of what window decal they can display in their car, but about finding the best fit and best value for you. What is it about the South that draws you? What do/don’t you want in a college experience? If you could kindly share your stats, over and above your SAT (GPA, rank, if your school does so, # of APs you have taken/will take by application time, etc) perhaps we could be more helpful.
There are plenty of schools that are difficult to get into. If you want the South, also consider Emory, Ga Tech, Vanderbilt, Tulane, Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, Rice, U Miami, etc. There are hidden gems in the south, Like CofC, Rhodes, etc. As others have said, if you want business, you are not guaranteed admission to Terry, and if your parents are worried about what they will tell nosy relatives/ friends/neighbors (as an example) , be mindful of this.
If you can provide a bit more info about your standing , ECs , etc, we can be helpful in addressing whether these schools are appropriate to consider.
@RightyRiper Well the University of Minnesota is now completely out of the question. Same with Pitt… Miami University was already settled. Might have to reconsider the OSU vs UGA dilemma
Be careful, there are Sooners on here ; )
UGA humbled all those Sooners the same way those Sooners humbled the Buckeyes. The question now is can UGA humble Bama… But fin the mean time, Cheers to those Dawgs for providing an awesome win.
Whats happened to the OP?
crickets…
Clemson - hands down
@jym626 He realized that the only person who can make these decision is himself
That’s true for everyone, @collegeisago .
Sounds like the only people who can make the decision is his parents , not OP @collegeisago
@carolinamom2boys LOL!!!
Go DAWGS!! Beat Bama!
