Clemson University vs. Virginia Tech.......need to make a decision by May 1st!

I am having a hard time deciding between these schools and I have to make a decision by May 1st so my parents suggested that I make posts to see what people know about the two schools and which one sounds more favorable. So, which one of these schools would you choose and why? Also, what do you know about these two schools?

THANK YOU!

did you visit both?

did you like them the same?

is the money situation equal?

Yes, I did visit both schools

Yes, I did like them the same

Money is not a problem according to my parents, they have saved enough money to cover the costs of both schools in full. Virginia Tech will cost about $28,000 and Clemson about $32,000 so that’s not a big difference.

Both great schools. Both have good academic reputations, great school spirit, and a beautiful campus. Similar sized student bodies, similar weather. Neither is really easy to get to or located near a major airport (not sure where you’re traveling from).

Only one clear advantage I can see - would you rather be a Tiger or a Hokie? lol

Seriously, you have two good choices here. I’d say go with your gut. If your gut can’t decide, then flip a coin. Heads = Clemson, Tails = VaTech. When the coin lands, look at the result and see how you feel: relieved or disappointed? That might help you decide which one you really want. Sounds silly, but sometimes it works for me.

Lafalum84 has a pretty good suggestion.

There was a shooting at Virginia Tech about 2 years ago. However, I bet that VT has since increased/tightened up security on campus, and it’s probably very safe now.

It was very safe 2 years ago as well - a random event doesn’t make a repeat more likely.

I’m with the flipping a coin idea.

Clemson is within easy driving distance of Atlanta. VT is within easy driving distance of Roanoke. Your choice.

Tech has a better reputation in the marketplace. It matters. I would opt for Tech.

What’s your major? Clemson in my eyes is just a smaller version of VT. I really like the lake Hartwell access at clemson and the golf course. VT is near Claytor lake but not quite the same, at least to me.

How far from home are both schools? How would you get home from each (fly, drive, bus, ??)

I am planning on majoring in either civil engineering or environmental science

Clemson is a 16-17 hour drive away, if I go there I will either take the train home to Boston (Amtrak) or take the train to Atlanta and fly from there.

Virginia Tech is a 11-12 hour drive away, if I go there I will take the university bus to Roanoke and fly home from there.

I’d have to say based on what I knew back in the olden days and what my oldest’s hs classmates have found (he has friends at both)–Tech. Not even close.

My D graduated from VT but also looked at Clemson. We were only at Clemson for an afternoon, but it seemed a lot more spread out than VT, and our tour guide wasn’t too impressive. When my daughter asked her about the vet school, she waved her hand and said, “It’s somewhere over there. I don’t take any science courses.” As you can imagine, that was the end of the road as far as Clemson was concerned!

The area around Clemson looked nice, but I think the town of Blacksburg seems to have a little more going on. My D loves the hiking around there. However, Clemson does have a Mellow Mushroom pizza place, and VT does not.

My S is off to VT this fall.

You can’t go wrong either way. Both are great schools for your intended major choices.
