climbing wall/gym

Does Rice have a climbing wall? S found a gym about 5 miles away affiliated with a hotel, but I don't know if that is open to the pubic/for membership. Are there other gyms in the area (less than 10 miles)?

We don’t have a climbing wall on campus. ROPE (Rice Outdoors Programs and Education) runs rock climbing trips to a local climbing gym regularly. See [Friday Night Climb : Rice University Barbara and David Gibbs Recreation and Wellness Center](http://recreation.rice.edu/rope/fnc/) for more information

^ Actually, Hanszen has a small rock climbing wall. It’s really small though, not what you are looking for. I just felt like pointing it out haha.

ROPE does tons of rock climbing trips that are all really cool though, so I would definitely check out the link Adam gave you.

If you’re from out of town and you are looking to get your indoor climbing fix there’s also two more options that are nearby: Texas Rock Gym has some excellent walls and there’s also one at U of H’s Rec Center. Both have day passes available.

Is it safe to go by foot/bike to U of H? (I’ll make a separate post about safety in the area.) Is it feasible to get to the Texas Rock Gym by bike?

I just gave a general answer to your other question, but no – I would avoid traveling by bike to UH. Not some of the best areas to travel through. There will be a lot of students at Rice who have cars, though, and my suggestion is for your son to find someone with a car who would like to participate in the same activities.

The Texas Rock Gym is about 15 miles away (through safe areas, though pretty far and a lot of traffic). Heh – my sons both had birthday parties there when they were in elementary school. Fond memories!
