Clinical rotation in high school/medically related experiences prior to college..

I was chosen to and participated in a clinical rotation program at one the major hospitals in my state for 1 year during my senior year of high school. Overall it was an incredible and amazing experience and it pretty much solidified my passion for going into the medical field, (that plus 8 seasons of Grey's Anatomy!!!!!!!). My question is, is this something I can include on my med school app even though I did it prior to undergrad, and will it give me a sense of note-worthy recognition or recognition period to med school adcomms??? Thank you!

Absolutely. My D did a similar program and her experiences with that program made it to the ‘most meaningful’ status on her extracurricular activities section. There is nothing on the primary application that limits you to including only college activities.

(Leave off the Grey’s Anatomy though). :)

Lol will do! Thank you! (:

If you end up having a space on your application. D. did not mention any of her HS. She was working in Med. Research lab during 2 summers in HS, but she was doing the same (at different Reseach Lab) in UG for 3 years. She did lots of volunteering / shadowing. She ended up running out of space and did not mention some important things even from UG experiences.

The only Grey’s Anatomy that belong’s anywhere near a med school application is Gray’s Anatomy ([Gray’s Anatomy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia](Gray's Anatomy - Wikipedia))

Lol thank you! And might I just add that I wasn’t planning on and will never include Grey’s Anatomy on my app for obvious reasons lol, just to clarify!!!

You have 15 slots to fill on your AMCAS application “experiences” section. Those slots will include all your activities, clubs, jobs, volunteer activities, shadowing, honors, awards and leadership roles.

As miami said–if you have room left after listing your more current activities, then it’s acceptable to include your high school experiences–though only if it’s a particularly significant experience and generally it’s expected for the activity to have been continued through your college years. The dates you give for your experience will tell your app reader it was a high school activity.

Ok, I understand. Thank you!

This does sound particularly significant to you. WOWM is right. I wouldn’t suggest including high school clubs, teams, minor jobs, and things of that sort. But since this is a year long activity and has had a major impact on you, then definitely include it. There are ways to bundle activities in the extracurricular section of the application to include more activities and you can flesh out your experiences at this hospital in your personal statement.
