To all native northeasterners and transplants, what kinds of clothes do you wear during the winter? Remember, this is coming from a guy who has lived his entire life in Houston, Texas. I want to know if I need to buy things now, or wait until I get there. I think everyone “layers” their clothes in the northeast…please help.

When it's really cold, you wear a shirt, sweater, and coat. And jeans. Not so bad, a shirt and coat is good or just a shirt and sweater. I suggest you buy it here (it won't be bad in September!).

Remember to get good shoes. Most important is that they have a thick sole.

Thomas, I'm from California and travel to the east coast frequently and let me tell you, I don't think I will ever get used to winters out there. When I'm out there, I usually wear (and recommend) plenty of wool sweaters and big down jackets and I also agree that a good pair of shoes is a must!

The only thing I am not looking forward to about Penn is the weather! :-p

Yeah, I've stocked up on turtle-neck sweaters...

I normally wear a lot of loafers in Texas, I guess that will be out of the question in the NE. Any shoe made of leather is bad in the snow/rain (exccept tennis shoes)

So, you've decided to go to Penn over Yale?

Leather is actually very nice to have in snow/rain, just so long as you have treated it right beforehand. Shoes that keep you dry with a thick sole is what you want.

u're class of '07??

you don't need heavy duty turtlenecks :) I live in Toronto and I get by fine with just a regular sweater and a winter jacket on most days. (get a double layer one, so that you can rip off the outer layer and wear only one layer during spring and fall). For colder days and longer walks get gloves and a winter hat. I myself have never worn snow boots here even in the thickest of winters. So, unless you intend to go hiking/playing in the snow you don't really need them.

I will be...I actually will finish in December of '07. I'm transferring 73 credits into Penn.

Well, I am still deciding between Yale/Penn, but I already have my housing/loans, etc. set up with Penn just in case I choose Penn.

If I don't go to Penn, I will just pay the cancellation charges on my room in Sansom Place East

When do you have to decide by?

I'm not sure, thinkjose. I'm kind of waiting to get my materials from Yale to find out about their procedures. I'm not getting any financial aid from Yale, so my decision may be fairly easy, but I just want to make sure...I'm probably analyzing my situation way too much, but I want to make sure I am making the correct decision for myself. But, if I go to Penn, once I get up to Philly and move into Sansom Place, Yale would probably be a distant memory anyway. I just want to be assured that I won't regret NOT attending Yale further down the road.

Good luck toy ou.

Thanks and I'm sure I'll end up @ Penn.
