I know Colby has a great D3 Men’s Ice Hockey team and an awesome rink - but are there opportunities for non-varsity athletes to compete at any level at Colby? I do not believe they have an ACHA club team (at least that I can find).
Son is a good AA player who is very young for his grade and does not know if he is willing to do the two years of Gap/Juniors it would probably take to even try for D3. Plus he thinks he wants law school so would prefer the time to focus on academics… but he loves to play!
If you have info on this, or other NESCAC-school club Ice Hockey programs, I would really appreciate it! I know Bates has an ACHA team, and Bowdoin apparently also, but that is all I have found so far.
I know that they have had intramural hockey in the past. (Not sure if they always have it – I think they do. They call it I play). Many sports that have varsity teams (i.e. soccer) do not have club alternatives, which is unusual. You may want to reach out directly to the coach even though you aren’t looking to be recruited. OUR experience was that folks were accessible and helpful, and if it is a must have, you definitely want to know that.
Thanks so much @gardenstategal . He’s looking for something a bit competitive, with checking, so intramural might leave him a bit unsatisfied… but your suggestion to contact the coaches was a great one and I think we will do exactly that. I might also wait until spring and re-post the question in the Athletic section. Thanks again.
