Clubs and activities

just wondering if any of the current cadets had some advice as to what clubs or activities are enjoyable at usafa. I was thinking of doing ski club. Anyone have any more info on thatt?

oh and can somebody also explain how many clubs an average multi-tasker has time for.

I do ski club, blue's club, and swing club. Ski club is a great deal, highly recommend it. The other two are great as upperclassmen.

I was definately thinking of doing ski club it sounds awesome. I have a few quesitons though. Cost? and how is it with your workload? and what mountain/s do they take you to?

ski club's alot of fun, and it's not like you have to go to anything, you just sign up for trips. they go to most of the major mountains, keystone's a pretty popular one. i'm in airsoft club too, it's alot of fun. we have games on weekends as long as there's not any training.

Cost for ski club: 60 to join. The liberty pass (unlimited access to keystone and A basin) is 175. In two trips, the bus pays for itself in gas.

Joining ski club as a four degree is HIGHLY recomended. It as said previoulsy takes you too all the major mountain resorts in Colorado, including Vail(the highest rated ski resort in north america) and Keystone. If you buy the Liberty pass(a season pass to Keystone and A-basin) you will have paid for it within 1 weekend of skiing. Another perk about ski club is that you get to "legally" wear your civie ski clothes when your out with the club, which as a 4* feels pretty good.:)

I am also a part of the Team Handball Club, I've found it alot of fun. If your not familar with the sport, its a mixture of Basketball, Football, Baseball and Soccer. In Europe its the second biggest sport behind soccer. We've gone to tourmanents at Westpoint and College nationals and are even hosting one here in a few weeks. We also have LOS status during the spring(which means due to practices, you get out of some other training events that you would otherwise have to go to, specially as a four dig). I really am enjoying it.

Would I have time to do ski club as an IC? (tennis)

I'm in the airsoft and small arms clubs...although they are going to have conflicting schedules :(

catholic choir, Chorale, spire (Special programs in religious education), rare occassion swing (coastie back in town!). i also did ski last year, but not this year

the # you can do depends on how well you manage your time, and what activities (some take more time than others) my advice is start light, then add when you can.

As a 3.5 semester probie, airsoft worked out great, because 95% of the matches were held at the academy...so I did not need to do paperwork every time we had a game. So, oddball things like that can make a difference for some people.

Each year, there is a "club day" a few weeks into the school year. GO! Most of the active clubs are represented at that event. There is also a link on the cadet home page with contact information on all of the clubs (sorry, it is an internal network item, but you'll have access to it right after BCT).

Does anybody know about Drum and Bugle Corps? How much time is required and is it something worth doing?

D&B puts in a pretty significant amount of time. Whether or not it's worth doing is for you decide.

Pros: You get to keep playing your instrument, and you get to travel to all away football games and other cool events

Cons: It's a pretty big time commitment, you may miss out on other things, and you may not want to travel to all those away events

There are a lot of others factors, but I'm actually not sure if we have any D&B members on CC, so our experience on this one may be limited... (gasp!) :p

from what i hear, ppl love the other ppl in it, but hate the director and the corps itself. if you want to try it, be sure to talk to someone in it when you are here before you sign your life away to it

does that include equipment rental? if not how much is that

This is kind of in relation to the equipment rental question. If you do join ski club are you allowed to bring your own gear, skis or snowboard, and if so is it kept in your room or where?

It does not include rentals. But you can rent a board, helmet, boots for the whole weekend for 30 bucks. That is a good deal. As far as bringing your own stuff. Yes you can have a board/skis, you usually put them in your room or in the squads storage room. The clothing will usually go to a upperclassman to hold on too, until you need it, unless you want to risk the random MWR inspections..;).

D&B (Drum and Bugle Corps nickname)? Yeah, I was in it for the first half of last semester, but then I quit cause it took more time than I could give. If you're strong academically, you'd probably be fine, but don't let some of the perks they will tell you about (band practice instead of squadron physical training) be why you do it. Not going to say why, but a lot of freshmen don't continue to do D&B past their freshmen year. Still, if that's what interests you, look into it once you get here.

Like eagle said, think about it before you sign the contract for it (yes, you have to sign a contract for it saying you'll stay with it until the end of freshmen year). The contract is extremely hard to get out of. The only reason I was able to get out was because I had my entire squadron and my academic advisor pulling for me, and because the Band Director was a flat out jerk and didn't like me. If you want to know more, send me a private message and I'll get you another opinion from my former roomate who's still in D&B

Sorry about the long posts... :(

Ski/board + boots for the season rentals are only $150 dollars too. Very cheap. I have my own set of skis and boots that I keep in my room. Used them on Sunday in fact. :)
