Clubs and Community Service?

Hi,

I know in high school we did community service and such. Do medical schools look at those things as well? Also, is it good to join community service frats or what not your freshman year?

What are other options of doing community service and is it needed? I was thinking about volunteering at a hospital for fun and just to see how it is.

Ha, another pre-med to compete against...

I swear, my O-Chem class is 90% pre-med.

this might be a moot point, but maybe doing community service is something you WANT to do, rather than something you feel obligated to do just because it'll help you get into med school?

^ that would be a profound thought for some college applicants haha

@Astrina

Wouldn't that be grand? I've seen first hand high school kids who do community service just to pad their college applications.

They complain about how difficult it is to get into college when they themselves are perpetuating the cause of the problem. I hate teenagers...

If you are pre-med, you should probably volunteer at a hospital at some point, although it's not "required" by any means. Some people think volunteering at a hospital is kind of a "waste" b/c you often have to do clerical-type work (answering phones, stamping charts), but it will help you decide whether you enjoy being in a hospital environment.
