Does anyone else have this? In my school, we have Model UN as part of a one semester International Relations class for jrs and srs and Mock Trial as a semester class for srs only.

It drives me crazy. Not only does it screw up the whole 4-year continuity thing, it also discourages the intelligent people that would usually be part of such a club because most don't want to deal with the essays, homework, and the lack of GPA weight the class holds.

My sister's school (an elite all-girls prep school) has a class period devoted to club participation, but the clubs themselves don't count as classes. At my (private international) school clubs meet during our half-hour lunch break, which might explain why there are very few clubs here and why the ones that do exist never accomplish very much.

Oh oh same here! My friend and I wanted to start a Model UN at our school, but the International relations teacher said that they are doing it in his class and we could just take it next year (as seniors). My friend and I were kind of mad because we seriously wanted a club, and we both have full AP schedules for next year.
The same thing with debate and yearbook at our school; there are classes for both of them (but I'm lucky because the debate teacher let me join without being in the class).

at my school the newspaper, student government and yearbook are all classes. I joined student government (it's a class BEFORE school) but I couldn't fit newspaper or yearbook into my schedule (which sucks because my extracurriculars focus on journalism, but i'm not involved in my school's newspaper).

Journalism is a class at my school as well, though there is a significant extracurricular component. That and Amnesty International are the only school-sponsored activities I'm involved in.

Yeah, we have school newspaper as a class, too, but it's afterschool and it's just pass/fail, so it's not that big of a deal. Plus you can do it every year, which is much better than just one semester of an EC.

I don't think we even have a debate team this year. We have a debate class, though. Last year we had Politics Club, which did debates, but I haven't heard anything about it this year...

Journalism counts as a "creative elective" at my school, along with art (which is separate from IB Art), drama (not IB Theater Arts), and music. Everyone has to take two creative electives in 9th and 10th grade and one in 11th and 12th. I took art in 9th and 10th and journalism all four years.

My high school had two Model UN courses - both had one after-school meeting a week and online components (mostly short/long answer questions and research). We had your typical band, art, and dance classes in the timetable, but anyone with a full timetable due to IB could take those courses before or after school for credit. There was also a "sports performance" course which was really just advanced gym for all the crazy sports people (for ex. our field hockey captain was on the canadian national team).
