I have a friend whose older brother goes to BC and told me that clubs at BC are very hard to get into- rigorous, lengthy process and low acceptance rate. He was rejected from all the clubs he applied to and credits that for having a very hard time adjusting and making friends his first semester. Is this an atypical experience or the norm?
Most clubs don’t require an application. What was your friend’s brother applying to? Most students do end up making friends in their first semester so I’m sorry to see he’s off to a tough start. I hope by now things are going much better for him.
Dear sashaofficial : If you are talking about high level Wind Ensembles, music groups, dance troups, or honor societies, you might be correct as these environments will have a tryout process. Club sports (down a level from Varsity sports) will often have similar tryouts. However, “clubs” as defined in High School are very welcoming at Boston College.
Now, given that you “have a friend who has an older brother” told you this information, did he also tell you which clubs were difficult to join?
@scottj said it perfectly as far as levels. The Student Involvement Fair is held each Fall (the first Friday I think) and the clubs are literally begging you to sign up. You can take down their info and sign up at a later date if you choose. Some are very active and some only get together a few times a year-you can ask when joining. D limited herself to 3 clubs freshman year to try but there are a multitude of clubs waiting for freshman to join! She joined different and more in depth things sophomore year when she had the lay of the land down.
@scottj - I don’t know which ones specifically, just that they were within the international relations/foreign policy/politics area. He stayed at BC (finishing his sophomore year now), and his brother will be in the Class of 2019 with me, so obviously it wasn’t anything that killed his entire experience.
