taffy- are you a girl or a guy?

guy and a half, suprise!

Envee06-I was at WP last week for a visit. While I was there, I met a girl trying out for the jump team. She didn't tell me much, but she said the rumor that they never get to go home isn't true. I guess they just have a bit of a different schedule, so they go home at different points than everyone else. They do have a shorter time at home than everyone else though.

snowboarding

paintball

drill team of course (lol jk)

hey marines4me...is cav scouts kinda like paintball or something? Im confused because how do you know if you "shot" someone? Or do you just run around and pretend your shooting them?

I know very little about time management/scheduling/requirements (ie, only male groups)...but off the top of my wanna-be heart/head:

Sandhurst

Cross-country

Anything else that takes my interest...(can we do something, say martial arts, even if we've never had any experience in it?)

To make the Martial Arts Team with authos you have to try out. The team does offer training for those who want to learn.

soccer1458: I just reread my post and realized that it was a little confusing; I was actually asking about the Sandhurst program. The last time I brought up the question no one seemed too keen on talking about it, and the topic turned to parachuting. Sorry about the confusion.

the martial arts team is VERY competitive to get onto. the team is only 20 people so that means that only like 5 plebes get on it... and they're probably all black belts. I think only recently they started accepting people without black belts. I wanted to join but I don't think I would make the cut... we can probably do it intramurally or something.

There are two "sides" to the Martial Arts Team: Olympic style and Open. It will depend on which system you train in...they both practice at the same time and share a coach, but don't always compete at the same competitions.

These photos show both sides of the team: http://www.usma.edu/uscc/dca/clubs/Club%20Setup%20Info/kartphoto.html

And a lot more photos here:

There are also very active Judo and Kendo teams.

If I don't train TKD, would i be olympic or open?

If you want to learn TKD the team currently offers 2 sessions a week in the early evening (not during intermurals or drill). Cadets from both sides of the team teach so it would depend on what your interest is. The team is interesting because the cadets come from a variety of martial arts backgrounds and of course from different schools. It's a great way to get a taste of the various styles and systems. There is travel involved if you make the team (Air Force, Ivy League Schools, a tournament at Fort Bliss, etc.).

point2010 - yep, plebes can be on the boxing team. I have a few friends who are on it. Technically, I believe plebes are not allowed to try-out until they have taken Plebe Boxing, but some people can get 'recruited' out of that class to join the team. I'm a girl, so I don't take boxing, but from what I can tell it's a pretty good deal to be on the team. :)

envee06: Sandhurst is pretty hooah - and I hesitate to use that word. ;) They have to do a lot of really tough training. Each company has an individual team, and they all represent each regiment. They have to do a lot of running, buddy-carrying people and equipment up hills, gas-mask ruck running, shooting, the whole works. But, there are many benifits for being on the team. For one, the plebes get to be on first-name basis with the upperclassmen. Another, it provides all sorts of really great experiences and practice. We go to a military school, so Sandhurst is sort of the epitome of the military training. Of course, it is also dangerous (in the sense that people get seriously hurt every year). My friends on the team are entirely smoked by the time they're done with practice, and 'serious' training doesn't even start until the end of this month. Hope that helps a bit!

Thanks for the info twin_b. I really appreciate it.

Now I really want to go to WP! I will go on the martial arts team. By the time if I get in WP I'll be a 3rd degree black belt. I am almost at my second degree now! I test in December! I am going to compete in the Florida Championships and will bring home another gold trophy like last year :)

Oh my god, now that I look at the pictures it seems like I can beat them now at 14 years old, lol. I am already breaking concrete blocks and atleast 4 boards stacked together each kick (including roundhouse).

You know what would really impress the military brass....bust some Kevlar with that roundhouse :D

Yeah really, luckily I got on the newspapers and they got a snap shot of my round house going through 4 boards in-step with the top of my foot. Also have 2 framed pictures at black belt testing breaking concrete with a palm heel strike. I've been looking through all the pictures and sad to say, right now, at 14 years old, I can take on some of those TKD black belts. The pictures of the kicks they were performing weren't too advanced and I could easily counter-attack. Now I am really confident of TKD helping me get in.

Never assume too much, young Padawan. You have much yet to learn in the ways of the force.

"Age: 14"

I believe you
