Clubs/Sports

Haha, I apoligize marines4me! I shouldn't have assumed you were a guy, I guess I thought I read that earlier. That is awesome that girls can join because it sounds like something I would love to do! And I'm used to doing things that are mostly dominated by men. Wow, cav scouts sounds really awesome!

It IS really awesome! And it'd be good to get more girls in it too. I do everything the guys do, even carry a 240 (wait until you see one of those--they're REALLY heavy). Have you been accepted yet? Before all of you guys leave for Beast, I want you to shoot me an email with your names so that I can look ya'll up next year.

I've been accepted. I haven't given them an answer yet, but as far as I'm concerned thats where I'm going. My parents just asked me to wait until after I visit in February. I have one question though, I got a speeding ticket in December (oops!) and I'm wondering if they would revoke my appointment for that. I could take it to court, but i really don't want to!

Nah, they won't revoke you for that. You should be fine.

what a hell-raiser

Haha, yeah I'm such a hell-raiser ;). It just makes me nervous taffy! It would break my heart if it got taken away, especially now that marines4me told me all the info about Cav and scouts. That club sounds like so much fun! Hey marines4me, do you have to tryout or anything? Or how do people get selected for it?

i hear people who are playing a varsity sport get special treatment? Like better food, and they get out of certain drills. Is this true?

I just talked to my Admissions Officer, and he says that I don't need to even report it! That is very nice to hear, I'm safe!

IDefineCool: Hehe, not exactly. Those who are on varsity athletics teams do have some obvious benifits. For one, they oftentimes get out of training activities during the week, as well as on weekends. In addition, they can normally obtain authos for various plebe duties. Sometimes this can work against them as well, unfortunately. I do not play a varsity sport, however I know some of my classmates (class of '09) are not very appreciative of the athletes in my company. That just comes with the job, unfortunately. Some of the Corps Squaders have to work harder than the other plebes, as their sports can take up their entire afternoons and evenings, as well as weekends. So, in that sense, it's a double edged sword.

I'll have to ask around about better food though...Heh, I heard that over the summer before Yuk year the football players all get two MREs. I'm not entirely sure that constitutes as 'better', per se, but hey, we're hungry cadets!

Hope that helps a little bit. :)

Twin_b - it's a pleasure to see you chiming in. Thanks.

I was in a football Company during Beast (Corps Squad football players). While everyone else got 1 MRE, they got two. Of course, they could never eat it all, so we shared the benefits. This was great, 'cause we weren't as hungry.

And yes, most Corps Squad athletes get out of a lot of stuff, and therefore suffer a great deal of resentment. Some think they're above being Plebes, and give everyone else bad reputations. Corps Squaders have a lot less time than everyone else, and the good ones have to work hard to get past the bad rep put on by everyone else. Hey twin_b, what company are you in?

Oh good lord... Please tell me your last name isn't Jones. lol, you can send me a PM if it is. I will laugh so hard...

What's wrong with having Jones as your last name?

Eh another thing...If I was to go to West Point and play a varsity sport, would that limit my major choices?

No, it wouldn't limit your choices.

Nothing wrong with having Jones as a last name, I just might know him/her. In fact, twin_b might be in my Company.

Lol, nope, I'm not a Jones. :) I do know quite a few of them though.

Sometimes - depending on which sport - it can affect your decision for a major. It definitely does not limit your options, however I know the majority of football players major in Law, because supposedly it's easier. Being on a varsity sport can take a lot of time away from homework, but if you prioritize you can still make time.

ahh the law program. this might be another topic for another thread but....how many law students get selected to go onto law school?

I'm pretty sure 2% of each graduating class can attend law school straight out of USMA.

WESTPOINTCDT
www.westpointcadet.com

Does anyone know anything about the boxing team? How and when are tryouts held, and how competitive is it for plebes to make the team?

Before going to law school after graduating from USMA you will have to serve at least 2 years in a unit.

I dont think plebes can be on the boxing team. If they have a 119 and under weight class i want to join that, though...

A while ago I mentioned Sandhurst and everyone kind of said, "Ugh, yeah....Sandhurst....hmmm.... anyway, how about that parachute team?" Is it really that bad? Does anyone know what kind of a training regime they go through?
