Hey guys. I was wondering if any of you could tell me about what its like to major in Computer Science.

Is it all coding?

Do you just sit in front of a computer 24/7?

Ive never coded before (although i am taking a MIT opencourse right now) and I really have no idea if i would like to major in computer science or not. As of now, programming seems really boring and tedious but i feel like the opportunities with a CompSci degree are very versatile (Hedge Fund, Pixar, Ea games).

A thread search in this forum will yield more information on this topic than you could ever care to read. That being said, CS is not strictly programming, if programming is your thing you would be better served by a local Tech/CC, Computer Science is more about the understanding of computing in general. I’m sure someone will chime in that is considerably more knowledgeable in this major than myself, but as mentioned above a thread search might satisfy your curiosity in the meantime.

Definitely not just coding all day. Computer science is, like the name suggests, a science. That is, not simply a technical/vocational sort of skill. There are certificates you can get to learn how to program, and normally programming goes with the job title ‘Software Engineer’. Actually, even in that role, if you’re more experienced at least, you do more planning rather than coding. The junior guys usually end up doing that.

A man named AuburnMathTutor will be here shortly to explain in …much more detail.

CS is much more than programming. It goes indepth into the theory of computation, the study of algorithms and data structures, complexity theory, artificial intelligence, and many others.

Perhaps AuburnMathTutor realized he has answered this question enough times that he isn’t going to bother this time. Seriously though there is enough information elsewhere in this forum to answer this and any other questions you have about a Computer Science major.
