Clueless Fool Needs Scholarship Guidance, Any Help Appreciated

I'm an Arkansas native who is in all probability going to attend U of A at Fayetteville. I have a decent GPA at 3.5, and a fairly high ACT score at 33 composite. I will be the only member of my immediate family to go to college, and as such I have very little help on the matter. My guidance counselor just started this year, so she's also relatively inexperienced. I was hoping someone here could direct me to any very good scholarships that I could realistically get. Raised by single mother who is currently pulling in money below the poverty line, so scholarship money is absolutely required if I'm to go to college. Will not be taking out student loans, however.

The best scholarships are those awarded by the college. Have you checked the UA web site? And there is a good chance you will need to take out student loans - though you would be limited to $5.5K as a freshman. Look at the pinned threads at the top of this forum for some full tuition scholarship schools you would qualify for. Do it ASAP since some of those apps are due very soon.

Are you a NMSF? what was your PSAT?

What is your major?

Even if you get a great scholarship, and you get a Pell Grant, you’re still likely going to have to take out a small student loan to cover any gaps.

If you apply to any schools that “meet need,” they will want your dad’s info, if he’s still alive.

Given your family’s financial situation, you really should look at UA-Monticello and LA Tech at this site, then look at the school’s sites for more info.

Some loans are likely to be necessary. but you should qualify for a portion being subsidized loans.

To begin with 33 is a great score not a “fairly high” score…great job kid
There are 2 types of aid, merit (high grades, good test scores…) and need (poor folk) you should be a strong candidate for both types. Don’t completely give up on seemingly more expensive schools. Some have excellent scholarships for strong students who can demonstrate need. Make sure you let them know the adversities you have faced and still become a strong student (single parent, lower income…) You show just the ability to overcome adversity that many are looking for. Hit some college websites. A few hours now could find big bucks. Also U of A has some of these scholarships too. I am assuming you are a senior so you got to get going. Some of these things will have November-January deadlines…Good luck!

If you look at the linked site that others have given you, you can see that U Alabama has automatic full tuition awards with your numbers which might be an option for you to consider. There are other such auto awards at some other schools as well. U of Ark at Monticello offers a full ride with your numbers, I believe. Check out what is available at Fayetteville, and make sure you aren’t missing out on any awards with deadlines or separate apps.
