Hi everyone.
I’m interested in studying theatre or MT and I don’t really know that much about Tisch…so I need some help! It may be that I haven’t read enough information, but I’m really confused by some things and I’d love some help :)

1) If you are in a studio other than CAP21, do you still have voice or dance classes. This is important to me because I love singing and don’t necessarily want to give it up.
2) Do you take regular classes, too (like math, english, etc) or just theatre/etc.?
3) How much time do you spend in the studio classes vs the regular classes (sorry I don’t know all the correct terminology for everything…i’m obviously new at this)
4) How many shows does each studio do per year, who is eligible to audition?
5) What about musicals?

that’s all I can think of at the moment…I’m sure I’ll have more questions soon though…
Thank you SO much for any information you can give me!!

LarryBoy,

My D starts classes at Tisch/CAP21 this week and while I don't know the answers to all your questions, I can field a few. To wit:

*Do you take regular classes, too (like math, english, etc) or just theatre/etc.?

Yes. Two days a week are devoted to academic classes and the school has a list of required liberal arts classes that kids have to take. The administrators at Tisch strongly believe in the idea of the educated actor.

*How much time do you spend in the studio classes vs the regular classes (sorry I don't know all the correct terminology for everything...i'm obviously new at this)

Actors and MT actors spend three days a week from (approx) 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in their "studio" (acting, singing, dance, movement, theater) classes.

I am sure some more experienced Tischies and/or their parents can answer the other questions and the ones I tried to answer more thoroughly. Best of luck!

LarryBoy, I think you should do some of your own research first, because you can find all the answers to these questions either online or by searching this board. Then you'll be able to make better use of yours and everyone's time by asking original questions specific to you.

there are voice and movement aspects to all other studios but they vary greatly, you can also take electives in voice and dance

you have some gen ed requirements - theatre studies, humanities and sciences. they are very flexible and have a lot of options, it's unlikely you'll have to take something you don't like.

3 days per week in studio vs 2 days per week academic

each studio varies with its own program but most tend to put on atleast one per semester, there are also hundreds of other shows to audition for in Tisch and student-run. any non-freshman drama student is elligible to audition. except that you can only do studio shows if you're in that studio.

Tisch does one musical a year and then amongst the other shows there are always some that are musicals

Thanks both of you. I have been doing research but some things confused me, and I just like to hear it straight from someone with no complications, if you know what I mean. Hopefully others can fin this information useful as well.

Yeah, I do understand - it can be confusing sifting through all the information.
