CMC Transfer Applicants Fall 2010

Has anyone else applied to transfer to Claremont McKenna for next fall? If so, where are you from and why would you like to transfer? I've started to get a little stir crazy since I sent in my application and I can't wait until May 15th.

I’m in the same boat as you are! So anxious to hear from them.

Should we post stats? Or do we not want to get into that mess…

haha…yea I’d prefer not to get in that mess. I am transfering from a CC. How about you?

Btw…did they tell you if they had recieved all components of your application? I’m wondering if I should contact them to make sure everything was recieved.

I went through this whole process last year so I know how you guys feel. In fact, the process was fairly extended for me. I was alternate listed at CMC in May, rejected in June, and finally accepted in August. It all worked out in the end though.

If you guys have any questions at all, feel free to ask. Anything for fellow transfers :)

Did CMC send you an email or a letter giving you any type of login to check the status of your app? Did you just call them to see if they received all of your documents? I’m trying to figure out if I should call and if so, how long should I wait before I call.

I’m trying to remember. I believe there was some sort of email notifying me that one of my recommendations was missing. I might have gotten it only because something was missing. It doesn’t hurt to call though. They’re very helpful.

Okay, awesome. I appreciate the info. I want to call but I’m worried that I’ll be bothering them, haha. So how do you like the school? What are your favorite and least favorite things about it?

Haha don’t worry. You won’t be bothering them. I absolutely love the school to this point. It’s been an outstanding first year though the difficulty of the academics was a bit of a shock, even coming from William & Mary. I’d have to say my favorite things about the school are probably the academics. They work you really really hard, but at the same time it’s incredibly rewarding. The professors are some of the most helpful people I have ever come across and are incredibly accessible at all times. Also, the social life is incredible if you’re into that. My least favorite thing is probably SoCal transportation to be honest. That issue can be solved with a car though and it’s not even that big of a deal.

Oh yeah, can’t forget about how awesome SoCal is. Definitely one of my favorite parts about CMC.

I definitely love the area. I used to live in West Covina and used to spend a lot of time in Claremont. Viva Madrid is one of my favorite restaurants. Plus, 21 Choices-- mmm! The Claremont college campuses are so nice. I love it there. I’m really hoping to get in.

That’s great to hear about the professors. That’s really important to me. What’s your major? Out of pure curiosity, what were your stats when you transferred?

Btw, thanks for answering all of my questions. CMC isn’t really talked about much on here so it’s hard to get info.

I was wondering whether or not to call as well. Star, I’m applying as a sophomore from a CC.

THEAjay, do you know what they look for most in a transfer applicants? And whether or not they prefer CC students or students from comperable colleges?

I’m currently in between 3 things really. Econ-Math-PPE heh.

I’m glad to answer any questions!

For reference:
GPA from W&M: 3.93
Econ Major
SAT: Math:710 CR: 720 W:730 Total: 2160
Lots of Model UN in College and a Best Delegate award
some other ECs as well.

Another note: Was rejected early decision for freshman admission.
*There are successful transfers with all sorts of stats so don’t worry too much about your numbers. *

I doubt there is a strong bias when it comes to CC/4 year school.
I’m certain that a lot of weight goes into your essays and that numbers really aren’t a big deal so long as you are qualified. The most important thing however, for all transfer schools, is why you want to transfer. Furthermore, were the reasons for wanting to transfer specifically to CMC compelling? CMC truly looks at the whole picture when they evaluate applicants so it is very hard to determine exactly what can make or break your application.

Thank you so much for all of the info. If you don’t mind answering, why did you want to transfer to CMC?

@ THEAjay89 - Thank you so much for all the info! :)

How is your living situation? Did they provide you the oppurtunity to live on campus or did you have to find another option outside of the college?

I was also wondering if they had any special programs to ease transfer students into the campus community.

vclaire: To be honest, it wasn’t really the fault of W&M. W&M was a fantastic place but I’m an econ person who wants to pursue a PhD in economics. As such, CMC provided a much better atmosphere for that. Socially, W&M was incredibly awkward and in all honesty, wasn’t that much fun outside of a specific group I was heavily involved in (Model UN). CMC has certainly remedied that with an amazing social life. The biggest reason though, is that CMC was my dream school since HS. Given the opportunity, after having substantially improved my record, it was not something I could turn down.

This school has turned out to be everything I could have imagined and has been a great experience. In fact, just got back from a seminar that was held outside, in which we talked about Adam Smith and Milton Friedman :)

star234:They provided me with on-campus housing. In all honesty, you will probably get shafted in terms of the living situation but you’ll only have to put up with it for 1 year. You’ll probably get Berger hall which is kind of crappy. On a positive note though, you’ll likely get a single, as most of the transfers did this year.

In terms of programs to ease transfer students into the campus community, it admittedly was not very much. It was hard at first to integrate myself with the rest of the community at first. However, you will realize that the people here are incredible outgoing and willing to make new friends. It really helps that the parties are an entire-campus event and do not exclude anyone. You will meet a lot of people this way, and through classes. I have made a lot of friends through classes as study sessions are the norm. Though the lack of a more comprehensive transfer program could be an issue at another school, you will adjust in a very short time here.

do the transfer applicants here by late april/ early may?

Transfer applicants are generally informed sometime between May 10th-15th

The information says May 15th. Do they ever inform before the posted date?

Yeah. I think generally it’s a couple days before.

Do they notify by email or is there a page we have to check?
