Hello. I wanted to know if anyone has applied as a transfer student before to Claremont McKenna College. I actually applied there my senior year in HS and was accepted. However, I chose to go somewhere else instead. Unfortunately, I believe that I made the wrong decision and would like to transfer this spring.

Is a spring transfer harder than a fall transfer? Do I have a good shot since I've been accepted before? Has anyone ever applied as a transfer to CMC or know of anyone who has? Any info that anyone can provide would be really helpful!

Also, is transferring in general just a difficult process? I would have to get recommendations from professors at my current college, but I would also have to explain to them that I need them because I want to leave! Des this shock professors and do they try to talk you out of transferring? Obviously, no college wants you to leave because the retention rate will drop. An info on transferring would be so helpful!

I have no first-hand experience with transferring, but I wanted to reply to a few of the concerns in your last paragraph. I've talked with two professors about the issue (which may not be a representative sample, but hey, it's what I have to offer). Both of the professors I've spoken with really supported their students' decisions to transfer. If the professor knows you well enough to write a recommendation, then (s)he probably knows you well enough to understand that you don't fit well at the school or to sympathize with the fact that you're unhappy there. One professor said "It's really best for him. He never seemed like a [school name] kid anyway...I think he'll be so much happier there," while the other said something similar, but did criticize the student a bit for her list of possible places to transfer (all places that were higher-ranked than her current school, at which she couldn't handle the workload or level). But no...I wouldn't worry about approaching the professors with this. They've all worked at and attended various schools...they have their own favorites and they won't be insulted. They may even agree with you :p

And remember, it's not ALWAYS just a numbers game. If you transfer, retention rate will drop. If you stay, alumni giving rate will probably drop. So hey...it's a wash.

It's only a few weeks (at best) into the school year, and I assume it's your first year. Do make sure you've given your school a fair chance. I have a few friends who've had trouble with such fast transfers b/c they haven't spent enough time anywhere to really get a handle on what they do and don't want...they're moving around kind of blindly, but without realizing it. It may be worth an extra semester where you are in order to ensure a better three years at the next place, if that makes sense. Juuuuust be careful. That said, good luck!

Thanks for your reply. I'm feeling very uncomfortable at college right now. Is there any possibility of reclaiming my admissions offer? I WAS accepted and classes ARE jst beginning. Is there any way that I could transfer now, since I was accepted and could be there right now? Sorry, but I'm so depressed and unhappy. Your post was uplifting and very helpful, but as of recent events I really feel like I can't even make it through 3 1/2 months here. I'm really upset and feel very isolated. I just want to go to CMC now. It really kills me that I COULD be there right now... :( Please help. Anybody!
