CMU Acting change to MT

Hey,

Does anyone know if you get in for Acting at CMU can you reaudition for MT after you start to go there for acting?

If you are in acting can you take voice/dance classes? Can you audition for the musicals?

Shar any information about CMU Acting if you know, especially if you know the answers to my questions - :)

THANKS!

-Zal

Wct or CMUjohanna's mom will be your best source on this, but I do recall hearing that a few CMU students HAVE been able to switch BOTH ways - from MT to Acting and Acting to MT - in the past.

It is very possible. If you get in for acting, you can audition the first week for MT. However, I don't think they auditioned any guys this past year because they accepted so many initially. Acting and MT majors audition for all the same shows. In fact, Cladwell in Urinetown this year was an acting major. So that's entirely possible. Also, for an additional fee, acting majors can get voice lessons and take any dance class that fits into the schedule. I'm pretty sure about all of this. It's basically what I gathered in various Q&A sessions and interviews.

I basically thought the same as what the both of you posted... I totally forgot that Caldwell was an Acting student, he said taht at my audition.

BrendanN - I did not know about the audition in the first week thing or about that no guys auditioned... did you hear this from students?

Thanks

I think that many of the classes are the same for acting and MT students in the first 2 years. We know an acting student, and I thought he told us that the acting majors do not take private voice. Maybe it is a group singing class instead. I can't remember for sure.

I'm not sure of the specifics, but I am going to Pittsburgh tomorrow to visit Johanna, so I'll get the answers. I do know that when she was a freshman, there were 2 freshman actors (one male, one female) who were asked if they wanted to audition for the MT program. They did and were accepted. One (Officer Lockstock in Urinetown) is graduating in May, the other left at the end of last semester to take a year off. Also, the MTs take the same acting courses as the actors (which is one reason why my daughter had CMU as her first choice). But I don't think the actors take any MT courses, although they do have a Voice for Actors class. I'll let you know more after I talk to Johanna (or you can send her a PM - her screen name is CMUJohanna and she has posted on CC several times.)

Here's my 2 cents-

My S was told during the first week at CMU he could audition for MT. That was his freshman year (3 years ago). He decided to stay in the acting track.

He had a voice (singing) class first semester this year which is a group class (junior year). He could take private voice but has not done so yet.

He has had ballet for actors, (something new last year). I think he had one other dance class.

There have been actors in the musicals just as there have been MT's in the plays. There were several MT's in the Shakespeare play I saw 3 years ago during parent's weekend and they were very fine actors.

MT's are considered double majors. They can't take anything outside their major. Acting majors take one class outside the major per semester (6 units min. or two mini's at 3 units each). My S says taking the mini's are the way to go.

All students have to take Interp and Argument and a computer class frosh year,(combination of basic skills and getting to know the CMU network). The history of theater classes are an academic class, (lecture, reading, writing papers and such). Everyone does "crew" frosh and soph years. You probably already know that you usually don't hit main stage until senior year, (there are exceptions), smaller stages junior year, first two years are mainly training years.

Are the Acting majors allowed to sing at the CMU Showcase?

Yes, they occasionally do!

I just talked to my daughter and got the following answers:
During the first week of the freshman year, Actors are allowed to audition for the MT program. Five Actors auditioned four years ago and two were accepted into the MT program. Johanna doesn't think anyone over the past three years has been accepted during that first week audition option. She doesn't know how many auditioned. She also said that to accept the acting program thinking that you would get to change to MT was not a good idea - the odds would not be in your favor.

Second, the Actors take two years of Dance for Actors and Singing for Actors. They do not take the same classes as the MT students.

Third, the Drama department decides whether or not Actors can audition for musicals. It depends on how large a cast is needed. This year Urinetown required a large cast and Actors were allowed to audition (juniors and seniors). Last year the musical was Candide and it was a collaboration between the School of Music and the MT department. Actors could not audition. Since MTs take four years of "heavy duty" acting classes, MTs can be found in all the plays.

The musical on the mainstage is usually limited to seniors and sometimes a few juniors. Last year, Johanna played Cunegonde (which was highly unusual for a junior to have a lead) in Candide, but there were only two other junior MTs in the production.

Finally, this year an Actor (who played Cladwell in Urinetown) sang at the Showcase. This is not usually the case, but it does happen.

I am with Johanna for a few days, so if you have any more specific questions, let me know and I'll get the answers for you.

Will you be at the LA showcase?

No, and I didn't see the NY Showcase either! But I have seen the last two musicals at CMU and I will see the last Cabaret of the year this Friday. Are you going?

I will be going to the LA showcase because I live in southern California and I am not too far away, (about an hour with traffic). I went last year and really enjoyed it so I am looking forward to attending this year.

I haven't been to a CMU Cabaret yet. We, my husband and I, visited CMU in February to see our S in a play, but didn't catch the Cabaret. I hope to catch one next year. I hope to see a musical next year too. All I have seen at CMU so far are plays.

ElvisPretzel:
Forgot to mention earlier that no one sings at the LA Showcase. Actors and MTs perform monologues and scenes, but no one sings.

Is the Showcase (LA) open to the public? The online "registration" and description made it seem as if it was only an event for professionals in the field. I would be interested in attending if the general public is welcome.

I emailed a personal note last year explaining I was a CMU parent. I think it really depends on the amount of room they have at the Falcon. The priority is for industry people to attend.

My daughter went ot the CMU NYC showcase but my understanding was that those in the showcase could invite guests. Her friend at CAP had a friend in the showcase who invited him and my D. Industry professionals are the priority and I don't think the general public can necessarily attend but the students involved do invite family and friends, from what I understood.

The Showcases are not open to the public. The purpose of the event is to introduce the seniors to the industry professionals. Obviously if the theatre is filled with people who are not involved with film, television, or commercial interests, it defeats the purpose. However, parents of CMU drama students as well as invited friends are allowed to attend with a reservation if room is available.

Got it, so my understanding of the Showcase was correct.
