CMU cost worth it?

CMU is really costly. Obviously, I have to take up loans. I have been selected to ECE and waitlisted to SCS. I've also heard that switching from ECE to SCS isn't that hard. I'd like to ask whether taking up loans for CMU would be worth it? I spoke to some enrolled in CMU right now, and they said that internships are readily available. Average internships are 12,000$ per summer. Keeping in mind all the internships or part time one can take, is taking up loans worth it? I really don't want to end up in a big debt. But people say that the pay for an ECE or an SCS grad is quite good and one can pay off debt in 4-5 years. Please elucidate anyone? I'm really confused!

Also are there any scholarships for internationals?

As the parent of a soon to graduate ECE student I can say that if you do very well there will be many companies at least interviewing for if not offering positions. He spent much of the fall in interviews both on campus and being flown to NY, DC, Seattle. Take a look at the salary surveys that each CMU school provides.

I think you’re suffering a bit of sticker shock. It’ll subside and all those things that you loved about CMU and encouraged you to apply will come flooding back. Clearly you must have done your homework and learned that CMU is quite well-respected and (bosssr) is right when he/she states that there will be opportunites for you if you do well. If you have other offers for comparable schools that are better, well then, that’s a whole other conversation. If CMU is THE SCHOOL for you then create a plan, gather the funds, work hard and you’re sure to land something good enough to pay your debt off before 2021 . . .

Is it worth it in loans entirely depends on how much in loans you’d have to be taking out and what schools you’re comparing it against. I took on about $25k in loans to go to CMU and feel it was worth every penny. That’s an amount that’s very manageable with a typical engineering salary out of undergrad. Would it have been worth $80k in debt? That’s much, much harder to say (if I had the choice between $80k and CMU or no debt and my state school I’d have taken state school, no doubt).

Also, can someone tell me more about the ECE Co-op Program at CMU?
How much does one earn from it?

Where would you go if not CMU?

UCLA or Purdue. I have been waitlisted at UPenn but it’s a long shot.

What is the delta between Purdue and CMU? $15K/year? In my opinion, that difference could be possibly made up in more internships at CMU…however no one can predict.

Being international student puts you more at risk. How much is your family willing to go in debt? Even 45K/year at Purdue is a LOT of money.

UCLA is almost as expensive as CMU.

That is why CMU is my first priority. CMU’s cost is equal to UCLA’s and Internships and Co-op prgrams might cover up the 15,000$ difference.

But I wanted to know how much one could earn from the internships and co-op programs?

I started out with ECE and thought to myself it was. 85k average right out of college is amazing.

Then I transferred to mech E with a 60k average (even a little less) and I’m wondering the same thing. I’m planning on coming out with no more than 25k in loans, but watching my parents send their check every month for me is disheartening nowadays…

@BlizzBlazer - Do you know about ECE’s co-op programs? If yes, can you please elucidate about them?
