CMU Email with option to switch RD to ED

My DS20 applied RD to SCS @ CMU, and received an email this weekend about switching it to ED. " If you’d like to switch your application plan from Regular Decision to Early Decision, let us know via email by January 28. You’d need to submit an Early Decision Agreement Form to switch your plan, and you’d receive your admission decision within approximately one week of completing your application. "

Although CMU is his #1 because of CS, he is on the fence because he really hasn’t given his #2 school a fair chance. (We planned to visit #2 again if he got in.) DS stats are good but not as impressive as others I have seen here. His ECs in CS are great though.

He will likely not do it, I am just interested if others received the same email, and if anyone has any insight as to what it could mean for admissions.

Wow. I can’t tell if this is good or bad news that no one else received this email

Run the net price calculator (take screenshots). If you can afford it, there is no harm in switching to ED. He can still keep his application in at #2 (he wouldn’t have to withdraw that until he hears positively from CMU, and it seems he will hear very quickly).

I would not take this offer as a good sign, nor as a bad sign. It is in the interests of the school to encourage you to do this. However, since your son was going to apply anyway, it is his first choice, and is an excellent school for his major, there seems to be little to lose. If the aid doesn’t match what you expect based on the NPC, your son will be able to back out of his agreement.

@Groundwork2022 - Thanks for the reply. Your suggestion makes sense. We are very clearly Full Pay, so wondering if that is a factor for the offer of binding ED.

He is applying as CS with IS as a 2nd choice. Do you konw if there is risk that he does ED and gets admitted into his 2nd choice major instead, if that would be binding? He really wants CS at all costs and may want to major in CS at another school over IS at CMU.

CMU is need blind for ED, so that was not a factor. His merits would get him in.

Oh wow, I never heard of this before. My son applied for ED SCS and got deferred to RD. Still waiting. Now curious what did your son decide for ED and outcome of this decision if you don’t mind sharing?Good luck. My son had the option of declaring the second major as part of RD. His argument was very similar no point in doing any other major if it was not for CS.

@shushu1 - DS decided against taking the offer. Altho we are comfortable being full pay, we need to wait to hear from his #2 which will be a bit more cost-effective in COA and transportation.

So his waiting game continues until the RD notifications come out, and can then weigh all of his options.

Good luck out our kids.I hope they end up a school of their choice. CS is very competitive.

I got this email too, and I was wondering if anyone else did and I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one! I actually decided to switch into ED, so we’ll see how it goes

Which school did you apply? Good luck

@bnicole0003 - The email said they would provide a decision within in a week. Did you find out yet?
