CMU/NU/uPenn

hey everybody..iv got accepted for an MS program in material science in NU, uPenn and CMU..and am throughly confused as to which one to accept!!
NU seems to be ranked pretty high for materials
uPenn is close to NYC where i have family..plus the overall ranking for uPenn is really high!
CMU im lil less convinced about..
wud be grateful for any ANY advice..tanks a ton

wats the cmu matsci dept like?

I was in MSE for undergrad at CMU and thought it was a great program. Professors were friendly, classes were hard, but in a way that encouraged learning and not frustrating, and people were willing to work together. I knew a few grad students while I was there, and they all seemed pretty happy and had made a bunch of friends with the other people in their year.

tanks racinreaver

I’d have to say Penn might be a good choice. CMU is OK but pittsburgh is probably more depressing than philly. Also Penn has better business creds if you are interested in minoring in that, not to mention humanities. Both are probably better options than NU. You can’t really go wrong though either way. If it were ECE I’d probably give CMU the edge, but it’s not. So imo, Penn > CMU > NU.

He’s going for an MS, so I don’t think there’s a whole lot to minor in. =</p>

I think you’ll get pretty great opportunities at both schools, so I’d recommend checking out what required classes they have and what sort of course offerings there are. At the MS level you’ll be likely to specialize in some sort of subset of materials science, so you should definitely go where they have more courses in what you’re interested in.

Hi everyone! :)

I’ve been accepted to the UPenn Master of Biotech program and have applied to CMU for their MS in Biotech and Management program. Haven’t heard from CMU yet. The program at CMU is more appealing to me since it has management related courses apart from technical, biotech related ones; which interests me. Penn doesn’t offer too many management or business courses as part of the program curriculum. But as a school, Penn is way more appealing obviously. Scope-wise, I’ve heard that alot of companies go to Penn for recruitment and at CMU, since the course is relatively new, people have to work their way into getting jobs. But the curriculum at CMU is exciting and at Penn, it sounds not so exciting.

So, basically if I’m admitted to CMU, it’ll be a very hard choice to make and I would appreciate all the help I can get.

Thanks alot!

This is a bit of a loaded statement, and I imagine to a lot of people that choose to attend CMU, why Penn is more appealing is not quite obvious.

RacinReaver, I see you’ve caught on to that line, but seem to have overlooked the fact that I find the CMU curriculum more exciting comparitively. What I’m saying is out of whatever I’ve heard from various people who’ve attended both universities. I understand your loyalty for CMU but you don’t seem to understand that I have no biases. I’m just trying to get some help from people. It would be nice if you’d co-operate.

Unfortunately, this board is primarily directed at undergraduate student programs, unidis. Potential grad students post here now and then, but they rarely get a coherent response, since most of us CMU posters are still undergraduates ourselves and we know very little about what grad programs are like. (You can see some good examples of this in this same thread and in other threads on the front page.) I am only really familiar with the graduate programs in English and Humanities and those at the Entertainment Technology Center.

You would probably find better, more reliable information at a grad forum like thegradcafe. :)

Thanks alot completelykate. I had no idea that this forum was meant mainly for undergrads. I’ll visit thegradcafe. Thankyou :)

See, again, this doesn’t explain why Penn is obviously a more appealing school. I’m a Philadelphia native, looked at Penn for both undergrad and grad, and, both times, found it somewhere I wouldn’t want to be and didn’t even bother applying.
