hey everybody..iv got accepted for an MS program in material science in NU, uPenn and CMU..and am throughly confused as to which one to accept!!
NU seems to be ranked pretty high for materials
uPenn is close to NYC where i have family..plus the overall ranking for uPenn is really high!
CMU im lil less convinced about..
wud be grateful for any ANY advice..tanks a ton :)

You type like that and are going for a masters and have that sort of deliberation methodology?

Pitsburgh sucks… not to mention the erroneous H at the end of the city’s name… Penn and NU same-same for GRAD.

tanks glenny! i appreciate it! :)…

arbiter, the MS stands for Material Science, not Master of Science lol.

No it doesn’t. Read their other threads. Besides which, why would you say “I got accepted to a material science program in material science”?

you are going to do MS, not BS and you should be looking at graduate rankings, not college. NU is not only TOP-3 in this field but also the birthplace of first material science department in the WORLD!

lol then you’re right… why is he deliberating/typing like this?

sorry if i don’t go into other people’s posts…

because penn is ranked between 10-14, Evanston sucks, and anyone who picks a graduate school purely based on rankings is dumb… also, Penn is building a brand spankin new nano building which is going to be amazing…

^ Evanston doesn’t suck. And we have Chicago too.

Also NU has already built 2 new “nano buildings.”

I think you should only criticize things you know about.

^^Penn is the only school that’s doing something while others schools are asleep? Penn is already late in the game and isn’t one of the big boys. The “brand spankin new nano building” isn’t gonna be done until probably two years from now; it’s irrelevant to the OP. NU >> Penn in mat sci and that’s a fact. Admit it. :)

Everyones bound to have their own biases, but I got into both schools, visited both schools and while NU is ranked higher(i’ve never argued that point) to say penn is that much worse for being ranked a few higher is ignorant… and evanston is boring everyone thinks that which is why all the grad students move to wrigleyville and commute to school every day

I feel like this thread is just turning into an argument and wouldnt’ be helpful for anyone actually trying to get information from it so I wanna take back what I said about evanston being boring… it all depends on what type of atmosphere you’re looking…

NU is a suburban campus(except for a few departments which are in downtown Chicago), Penn is Urban

NU is ranked 2 by USN and is a great program of which I can say nothing bad about from my meetings with professors and visitations

That being said Penn i believe is ranked 13 by USN and while rankings are helpful I do not personally believe that they’re that important if the difference is around 10 and there are certainly many other factors to consider when choosing a graduate school

So concluding is that Northwestern is a fantastic program, Penn probably being on the next step below, however one can get an extremely good education at either school and I believe that a graduate degree from either is very well respected… both schools have similar top 10 endowments(NUs being slightly higher) so they have a lot of money to spend on campus in general

They’re both good schools, I had originally planned on going to NU but after visiting both schools my mind changed… not because i like NU less but because i liked Penn a whole lot more than i thought i would

not to be a complete hypocrite, i’ve recently had a change of heart and will be at Northwestern next year

Good for you MechEMatSci. “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.”
