CMU vs GaTech vs USC

I'm trying to decide among these three schools for an MS. (MS in CS at USC/GT, MS in Software Engineering at CMU). I figure CMU has the best reputation/hiring prospects, but are GaTech's prospects comparable? Is USC even worth considering given I have a choice between the other two? I'm just looking to do a terminal master's, so not research interested.

I'm just comparing job prospects of these programs. I've already considered costs/locale and factors like that. Anyone help me out?

Forget USC, it’s a great school but it’s not top tier. Basically if you’re going into the computer engineering field, CMU, but Ga Tech is literally on the top 5 best engineering schools in general and compared with MIT, CalTech, and some of these schools. Ga Tech is number 2 in BioMed Engineering and is on the top 5 for many different engineering programs, don’t let the state school label fool you. For opportunities, CMU like I said is great for computer engineering and many people in the Silicone Valley, California area get hired from CMU but for basically any other engineering programs, Ga Tech is probably the better choice.

G-Tech without a doubt. All 3 are outstanding schools but Georgia Tech stands with the best. In engineering, this university is always in the same conversation as MIT, Cal Tech, Berkeley, and Stanford. Can’t go wrong with either choice though. In my opinion, USC would be the most fun and CMU would be miserable. Just my opinion.

Just to be clear, software engineering falls within the realm of Computer Science, which CMU undoubtedly has the best reputation in. So GT’s prominence in general engineering fields doesn’t apply to me as much. I do appreciate the input though.

Any other thoughts on the difference in hiring prospects between CMU and GaTech?

CMU gets all of the big companies coming through, and if you want to check out career prospects after graduating there you can check out this page: [Post-Graduation Survey: Salaries & Destinations-Career and Professional Development Center - Carnegie Mellon University](http://www.studentaffairs.cmu.edu/career/students/gps1/explore/survey/index.html)

I was a CMU undergrad and can vouch for Pittsburgh being a fantastic city for being a student in. It’s cheap, there’s lots of stuff to do, and there’s actually pretty good public transportation.

I got offers from USC and Gatech. I’m going to have to decline the USC offer soon since they would only give me admission if I promise to attend. I felt Gatech’s academic standing is much better for my study in engineering than USC even if I prefer Los Angeles that much more than Atlanta.

dashogun - Did you apply to a master’s program at GT? How long ago did you hear back? I’m still waiting…
