CMU or Gatech

hi everyone,,

well i have got through MS ECE at CMU and Gatech, specializing in Computer Architechture/ Embedded Systems...not received any aid...i am not looking towards a PhD, and would like to get into the industry...am helluva confused in choosing between the two...would be great if you'll could help me...

CMU is absolutely top ranked. 3rd ranked in computer engineering against Georgia Tech which is 7th ranked, though both the programs have an excellent repute. Also I have been told that intenships and job opportunities in this field after a MS are much better at CMU as its more industry savvy as compared to Gatech (please correct me if i m wrong) .....getting a good internship+job is of top priority....also the courses offered by CMU are better and more in number for computer architechture / embedded systems and at graduate level over gatech which has few courses, most of which are at undergraduate level...also the courses are project based and more practical at CMU than Gatech..

but cmu is costlier. $47k tuitions over 1.5 years against $33k over 1.5 years at gatech....the CMU degree is a professional MS...coursework/project based..(but i guess that helps from an industry point of view..dunno? i actually dont have much knowledge about the repute of the professional ms degree, as its first introduced from fall 2006)

Gatech on the other hand is a traditional ms -- one with both course work and thesis options. The Gatech course offers more breadth.. you have to specialize in more than one area...although as i said, courses in comp arch / embedded are less. there is a possibility of securing an assistantship (Though on contacting seniors from Gatech, I have been told that the funding situation is going to change from fall 2006 -- the GRA's wont cover tuition fees and securing aid would be difficult. I dont know whether thats true).

Money is a criteria, but if CMU is really worth it, then I really dont mind spending little more, as I believe that would be covered through internships. So what do you suggest? also what is the internship and job scene at gatech, especially after an MS ECE?

what do u guys say?

You might want to check starting salaries for both schools in the masters programs. A difference of $14000 between the programs doesn't seem like much if CMU salaries are higher than GTech's which I'm guessing might be the case. Wouldn't take too long to recoup that $14K.

Also suggest posting this question on the "Engineering Schools" forum since this deals mostly with undergrad.

Both Intel (research lab) and MS (new building)have very big presence at CMU.

Um...I know nothing academics-wise, but according to my roommate, who looked at both schools for undergrad engineering, CMU is prettier, and the georgia campus was too urban for her. CMU is sort of set back from pittsburgh a little next to a giant park. I know it's a small part of your decision, but...
