CMU vs USC for Engineering and overall reputation/prestige

Got into USC and waitlisted at CMU. I’m thinking about paying $800 to get on priority waitlist for CMU, but if I choose USC over CMU I won’t have to. I’m really interested in Biomedical Engineering, but not 100% sure. I really like USC school spirit and weather and LA. I also like how I can minor in business or something useful at USC. What are your thoughts? I’m leaning towards sticking with USC right now.

Are other costs (including travel) an issue?

@kaukauna no issue.

If you were my son / daughter my first instinct would be to vote CMU, because of the academics (and I’m an alum, haha). You can certainly minor in business at CMU (or some facet of computing in a number of multidisciplinary areas), so that wouldn’t be an issue. But since USC is strong in engineering (and it certainly has a great alumni base), and since you feel more comfortable at USC I might think that overall you would thrive at USC and possibly not at CMU. With children who are current and former college students, I recognize that success in college is more than grades, although they are important. There is establishing a life long network. There is the development of character, you hope. There is the development of leadership ability, you hope. There is the possibility of accidentally bumping into different academic realms that you hadn’t thought about before but which, when found, reveal a life long path. These things are what I mean when I say “thrive”. As my son / daughter we would talk about these things. And then if I was convinced that you had thought it through and that you were not just interested in weekend parties, then I could support USC. Most important thing for you and your family: make the best decision you can make and then don’t look back. Best of luck to you.

@kaukauna Thank you! :slight_smile:
