Anyone have experience with the degree in 3 program? Do you know how many college credits (AP or actual credits) are needed before high school graduation to participate in this program? I see that attending in summers, starting before college freshman year, is necessary. Can these classes be taken outside of the UT system?

I’d rather take my time and spread classes out evenly in four years rather than compressing them into three. You’ll probably need 20-30 credits from AP while taking some classes in the summer. Though it might save you money, I would suggest letting your son/daughter enjoy their time in college and then go on to get his/her PHD in math(?)…

Just exploring different options. And yes, a math PhD is his current goal.

To earn a degree in 3 years, you really need to consult with an academic advisor in your student’s major. They can help you determine what AP/CLEP credit will apply toward the student’s degree plan. Not all AP/CLEP credits necessarily will apply toward graduation requirements.

The timing of courses will need to be planned in advance because not all courses are offered every semester. Planning for prerequisite courses is particularly important.

Community college courses are transferrable per the following:
[TCCN/UT Transfer Guides](http://www.utexas.edu/student/admissions/tccn/)

There are so many variables in trying to earn a degree in 3 years it would be difficult to answer your question with any specificity. Even if you student had 40-50 AP/CLEP credits (and many students do) the timing of course offerings and class size limits requires a plan in advance with little or no deviation.

If your student can finish in 3 years, that would save $25-30K plus they would be able to start their career a year sooner. However, if you can afford the $25-30K plus lost salary for 1 year, by all means allow you student to take 4 years to graduate. UT-Austin is a great college experience and students are generally in no hurry to leave.

Good information! Actually, its him who will need to consider if he can afford the living expenses. We have prepaid for 128 hours of tuition and req’d fees. :)
