CNU - BSMD Program

I think an issue is the 4 students who were rejected and the 2 students who were waitlisted still have no clue why that occurred. All six students have claimed openly that they met all the requirements, and that they all felt they had strong interviews.

That’s the bigger issue as it seems CNUCOM is randomly denying students instead of giving them reasons. No student has been given a reason on why they were not given the acceptance.

The fact is: if CNU administrators are telling students at open houses that the “interview is a formality”, then there is clear baiting and lying occurring. I have seen faculty tell multiple prospective students at open houses that “every student who gets the 510 MCAT and 3.5 GPA will be accepted”

Part of COM Technical Standards (on the website, public knowledge):

“Professionalism
Demonstrate the judgment and emotional stability required for full use of their intellectual abilities.
Possess the perseverance, diligence, and consistency to complete the College of Medicine curriculum and prepare to enter the independent practice of medicine.
Exercise good judgment in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.
Complete all responsibilities attendant to the diagnosis and care of patients within established timelines.
Function within both the law and ethical standards of the medical profession.
Work effectively and professionally as part of the health care team.
Relate to patients, their families, and health care personnel in a sensitive and professional manner.
Participate effectively in physically taxing duties over long work hours, function effectively under stress, and display flexibility and adaptability to changing and uncertain environments.
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance for classes and clinical responsibilities.
Contribute to collaborative, constructive learning environments, accept constructive feedback from others, and respond with appropriate modification.”

Question, Is it standard practice for medical schools in the US to give applicants a specific reason for denial? Or do they get a generic letter?

Med schools send you a generic rejection letter. If you ask them why you were rejected, they will not tell you. There are always more qualified candidates than they can admit so they pick the best among the pool of candidates they interview.

To reply to both of you, the issue that every BS/MD student and parent has is that when we joined CNU, we were told by the literal administration about a guaranteed acceptance with a 3.5+ GPA and 510+ MCAT because that’s how they recruited us in the first place. It doesn’t matter to them what the website said because we had the dean of CNUCOM tell us. Also from 2018 till 2020, every single BS/MD student was accepted no matter what. They decided only this year to change and trick us. It was a simple bait-and-switch tactic that is used in false advertising.

Out of 22 BS/MD students who got the 3.5+ GPA and 510+ MCAT, only 4 were accepted. Regardless of what anyone’s argument is to defend the school, 4 out of 22 is a terrible percentage for a BS/MD program

When did the interview season end? Yesterday? or in May?

Hang in there. it’s stressful time. It’s not over until it’s over.

BTW, how big is each BS-MD class? 25?

From what I know, each class is about 30-35 students? I have no clue, to be honest. Also, the interview season is till about mid-April from what I heard. If you do have a child or family friend who is thinking about this program, I strongly urge them not to join. I have seen first-hand the emotional and mental impacts that this BS/MD scam has caused in the older class. It is really sad to see this happen to fellow classmates

I would urge you to scroll up and read some of the posts about CNU, it’s accreditation (not fully accredited unless this recently changed), it’s proposed hospital which was not approved by the area, etc.

Perhaps these students should view this as a good omen…not getting accepted. Take a gap year, do something medically related, and apply to other MD and DO schools. That might be a better option.

CNU jus release their Match day result. Full list can be found at their website. Here is their official statement:

“2021 Match Day!
CNU COM 2021 Match rate: 98.0%
Primary care Match: 57.3%
CNU COM students have matched in very competitive specialties such as Orthopedic Surgery, Dermatology, Urology, Ophthalmology, Diagnostic Radiology, Otolaryngology and surgery.
Many of our students have matched in well-known and very highly regarded residency programs including: University of California San Francisco, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science, New York University School of Medicine, University of Chicago, Emory University School of Medicine , Baylor College of Medicine, US San Diego, Kaiser Permanente.”

I am sorry you are feeling discouraged. Good luck on your quest to become a physician

What does that mean?

CNU does not have a combined BS-MD program. They have a “BS to MD pathway.” This means that there are no guarantees when it comes to applying to their medical school. CNU undergraduates do not get preferential treatment from COM admissions when they apply, so it doesn’t make a difference if you attend CHS. It may be better to apply to other universities for undergrad, because they offer more opportunities for extracurriculars and are more prestigious.

The statistics that they posted about COM students have nothing to do with what we are talking about… whoever they have already accepted into com in the past may have done well, but that doesn’t change the fact that they have failed to matriculate qualified CHS students to com.

Fully agree! I think a CNUCOM official made an account and posted those statistics to distract everyone from the issue at hand. The current issue is that only 4 out of the 22 BS/MD students (who achieved the 3.5+ GPA and 510+ MCAT) were accepted. That is an 18% matriculation rate for students who met the requirements which is terrible for a BS/MD program

Good guess. I am actually a community physician with no financial ties to the university and precept medical students every now and then. I know a few fourth year COM students, wrote LOR for them. So I follow where the students match in COM with interest. I am also looking at the CNU’s pathway program because my child will be applying for college this year. I can tell you that my interpretation of the rules to get admitted to COM as a pathway student is very different than what is discussed here.

But this is the internet, where everyone is anonymous. Goal is to be courteous to each other and be respectful of others opinion. Getting into medical school is tough. Top GPA and MCAT scores are not shoo-in for any medical school.

CNU’s BSMD program reminds me of the pathway program offered by UC Riverside when I was applying for college eons ago. 25 students in this program were guaranteed admission to UCLA school of medicine each year. Typically each class would have 350 plus students. UC Riverside advertised it heavily to us high school seniors.

Good luck on your endeavor to become a doctor.

The main point that needs to be addressed is that CNU’s program has ZERO guarantee even if you do have top GPA and MCAT scores from their college. This shows that CNU does not have faith in their own college’s ability to prepare students for their medical school. You would be better off attending a different college and getting the same GPA/MCAT there.

It is possible, and I wouldn’t be surprised. Did you hear about how one of their faculty posed as a private citizen to endorse their hospital at a city hall meeting? Here is a link to the story: Proposed Elk Grove hospital faces more controversy

Ha ha. I definitely know her. She is VP of something at CNU. Definitely part of the CNU leadership group.

https://www.bizjournals.com/sacramento/news/2021/04/20/california-northstate-students-allege-fraud.html

BA/MD students at CNU have filed a class action lawsuit alleging fraud and breach of contract against the administration of CNU.

The LCME has placed CNU on probation for its provisional accreditation status. CNU failed to meet any of the 11 standards required for accreditation. CNU has until January 2024 to bring its program up to standards or it will permanently closed down.
