I am really confused about what to make of Waterloo's co-op program. I cannot afford Waterloo without the proceeds from Co-op earnings; however, as an international student in the financial crisis, I see little hope of finding good jobs. Is there any chance that I will land good jobs? Also: What is Waterloo's criteria for selecting applicants for their (best) Co-op jobs? Can I earn $10,000/yr on average through co-op "toil"?

Thanks a lot for your contributions.

p.s. There is no Waterloo forum so I had no choice but to post here

TheGame, I don’t know the answer to your question. It might be a better solution to inquire at Waterloo itself, rather than here. There is likely someone there who is involved in coordinating the co-op opportunities who would be able to give you reliable information. Another aspect of the co-op issue that you’ll have to determine is whether or not the fact that you’re an international student will affect your being able to work legally in a co-op program.

“$38,000 - $77,000 in potential co-op earnings by graduation”

Obviously, this is an average and not a guarantee. But if your major is in a fairly high-paying field (sciences, engineering, finance, etc.) it should be somewhere around there.

You definitely can work as an intl. student, although some extra paperwork is necessary:
