I am an international student and got accepted to Electrical Engineering and the Honors program. Co op is one of the prime reason I chose Northeastern. Can someone tell me how difficult it is for international students to get good co op jobs? Is the process too difficult? does the firms that hire domestic students hire international students as well?
There are some jobs which require us citizenship - (for whatever legal reasons) - most do not.
@kiddie Are you currently a student there? Or are you the parent of a current student? Could you tell me about most engineering major students…Apart from the government jobs, does other engineering firms hire international students frequently?
I am a parent - my child is not an engineering major - so I don’t know specifics about those co-ops. I know that the directory of co-op jobs has a field to indicate if you need to be a US citizen just like it has a field to indicate if you need a car for the job, etc. I also know that a huge number of students (like over 90%) do co-ops.
The ones that require US citizenship are either working for government agencies or the projects are on government contracts. Unless a job is specifically marked as requiring citizenship in the database for reasons like these, there’s no reason they wouldn’t hire an international student. I don’t know of any international students who have had trouble finding a co-op because of their foreign citizenship.
@kiddie and @nanotechnology Thank you so much! It really helped me a lot…I am pretty sure I will be going to Northeastern…Hopefully the Co-op doesn’t become an issue.
I should also mention that some kids do international co-ops, so you might be able to do a co-op in your home country.
