My daughter is very interested in NEU because of the co-op program. She is currently a high school senior. There are several areas of interest to her in terms of major and career paths. How is NEU for students who are undecided initially? Is this a limitation?
My daughter started NEU as undecided 5 years ago. The program was excellent and students definitely went on co-op as undecided. The program centered around advising and career exploration. They attended programs about what a particular major is like to see what they might enjoy pursuing. Their schedules were very carefully planned so once they declared as a major they would not be behind and could still graduate on time.
My daughter declared her major the second semester of freshman year. Ended up being a math/econ major with a history minor. She graduated in 4 years with 2 co-ops. So even though she started undeclared she was able to get a double major with a minor and 1 year of co-op in that time.
Despite ending up as a math major - she didn’t take a math class her first semester. This was actually very smart advising as the Calc 2 she would need depended upon which major she was.
I think coming in undecided is actually a smart thing to do - instead of picking something and then changing your major a year or two into college (which might mean not graduating on time).
However, the program has been improved since then. Their website explains how it works https://undergraduate.northeastern.edu/explore/
Also note that the earliest a student would do coop is spring semester of sophomore year.
