Co-vals suck

my school has 1 harvard, 1 yale, 3 princeton, 1 MIT, and 2 Wharton. none of those is the val. u think valedictorianship is important? ur hard work in high school got you into COLLEGE. thats where the true glory is at.

(especially valedictorianship of a noncompetitive school)

Meh, I see where you're coming from. I really do. And you are right; it doesn't matter in the long run. What I'm trying to point out is that it's not fair and it's not right. You'll probably come back with the famous "life's not fair, get used to it" line, but you know, if no one ever pointed out and tried to correct the unfairness in the world, we'd be pretty screwed by now. Principles, man.

College doesn't define your glory, either. Nothing defines your glory except who you are. There are a lot of Harvard graduates who end up homeless with a doctorate. It's not about the glory. It's about getting what you deserve. Yes, nothing in high school matters when you get in the college scheme, and the last thing you want to do is tell people in orientation about how smart you were and how cool you were in high school. The fact is, it's not about prestige, it's about self-satisfaction.

MayFirst, I have great sympathy for you. Honestly, that's crap. To alter grades and policy to change for a dissenter sucks, and it sucks more **** that you had already essentially received the honor and practically had it recinded.

I am non-competative, that's why I chose Brown. I hate when people are cut throat about other people's performances. To me, it's about succeeding on a personal level to a degree I accept. But, I'd still be ****ed as hell in May's situation.

I like the idea that you are on a 4.0 but certain courses must be taken to be val. That's far as well, in terms of sharing course load. The real problem is, however, that this discourages students from sampeling courses to their interest, a concern of any Brown student.

lol alright rabo. i think we understand each other now. getting screwed by the system always sucks. i was pretty mad that during my junior year they scheduled our schoolwide officer elections on the day of the AP United States History test. thats probably the most popular AP in my school, and its taken junior year. i lost to a sophomore by a very small margin (seniors werent allowed to vote). i was pretty angry about that, but i didnt want to whine. i guess its better to whine in anonymity on an internet forum than make a jackass out of urself in person.

sorry i didnt show enough empathy at first. u were whining, but i probably would too if i were you (knowing your class rank through all these years, my school doesnt rank).

Yeah, I definitely was whining. Can't do in public ya know. Bad rep.

haha... it totally feel your pain, i was getting upset listening to it... im 5 and i dont really care much... did i study really hard, of course not. i spent my time doing things that i would remember in five years. im sure u remember studying for tests, but i dont know, i work on a differnt mindset... oh welll... in my book, you guys are still first, and if i ever finish writing my research reportm, ima ask to give a speach at graduation. the time not studying was spent building relationshps with people, so im sure they will allow me to do it... haha, i get to adress the class, cant wait to hear their groans!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to the non-competitive attitude at Brown. Valedictorian is V.D.; it sticks with you for life, it sucks getting it, and it's not very sexy at all. But don't worry, I'm sure that just about every valedictorian you meet at Brown has spent their high school years doing much more than just studying; I know I have. To get into Brown, you have to do more than lock yourself in your room at 3:00 every afternoon and study for 8 hours. I read somewhere that Brown is a college of "5,000 extroverts." I'm lookin forward to that : ).

yaeh....2/3 of valedictorians get rejected from Brown...

But 1/3 get in, as opposed to the normal 15% or so.

But seriously, there are so many subjective factors in determining valedictorian, it's really irrelevant. Just about anyone has the capacity to be valedictorian if their environment is right and if the take the right classes, especially anyone in the top 10 - 20 percent. Still, though, it's nice to not be cheated out of it.

ehh... i think i practically gave it up, so mayfirst, i think you are right, anyone can do it... and im sure those people didnt get into brown because they were valevictorians (where did this term come from?) but because they were good, intresting people, WHO ARE ALSO valevictorians...

it's latin, crum. i could be specific but i'm trying to keep my nerdy impulses under control. i guess it would be fitting to call them valeVictorians instead of valeDictorians, because that seems to be most people's attitude about it.

Valedicotiran. Means smoeone owho gives the farewoel ladresss. VlAQDIEnlet. Means good bye and **** . So the;y hssay goodbye . to thge graduates and astuff. YOu know like how thye hgive smpeahces and shutssf. Theya'res sayign igdood bye.

RaboK - I agree with you: its the principle of the thing! Of course there's people that will tell you it means "nothing", and that no one will remember or give it importance 2 years from now. But the fact is, it means something to the person who worked for it and earned it. Everyone is so caught up in being "politically correct", that they are afraid to speak their mind or say otherwise.

jigga what rabo?

Haha, I had a reaaaally fun night last night...

Valedicotiran. Means smoeone owho gives the farewoel ladresss. VlAQDIEnlet. Means good bye and **** . So the;y hssay goodbye . to thge graduates and astuff. YOu know like how thye hgive smpeahces and shutssf. Theya'res sayign igdood bye.

umm... if anyone else didnt understand this, RAISE YOUR HANDS... and if by some miracle you were on the same stuff as Rabo and uunderstand it, then translate for me please

i could care less about valedictorians, only about how short their speech is during graduation.

=

"valedictorian means someone who gives the farewell address. ?? means goodbye and $hit. so they say goodbye to the graduates and stuff. you know like how they give speeches and stuff. they are saying goodbye."

is what i got lol

what i find amusing is the going to CC when intoxicated lol
